Factors affecting academic performance of students in vocational training institutions in Nakawa Division-Kampala

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the factors affecting students’ academic performance in Vocational training institutions in Nakawa division Kampala. Several studies have highlighted different factors that affect students’ academic performance however no studies have looked at the factors affecting performance of students in Nakawa Division The target area was nine of courses offered at Lugogo vocational training institute. 84 students were interviewed with an aid of questionnaire. 82 respondents were interviewed by simple random sampling and data was captured by use of Epidata later exported to SPSS to test hypotheses as regards the specific objectives of the study. It was found out that there is a relationship between last semester average marks and a course enrolled for, meals taken per day because the probability values were less than 0.05. It was further found out that there was no relationship between students’ last semester’s average marks and Age of the student, where a student come for classes since the probability values were greater than 0.05. The parents and institution should ensure that students can take all the meals in a day per day. This can be through paying for food for students at the restaurant or account for the meals on the tuition paid. Students should also make small savings for example during holidays in order to have some extra money for meals in case the money given by the parents/guardian does not sustain the student for the whole semester
