| dc.description.abstract | Delay in construction projects is a condition where the project cannot be finalized within the planned time. It is a common issue faced in the construction industry all over the world especially in developing countries. In the Malaysian construction industry, 17.3% of construction projects experience more than 3 months delay and some of them are abandoned Sambasivan and Soon (2007). Hence, the study of factors contributing to delay is very important in order to reduce the number of projects that experience delay in project delivery. Three objectives of the research have been formulated, namely (1) to identify factors that contribute to delay in construction projects; (2) To examine the additional cost resulting from delayed completion of structures on construction projects; and (3) To determine the measures that can be put in place to minimize construction delays. Questionnaires were distributed during data collection stage and only 18 responses were received. The respondents only consisted of contractors, consultants and clients. Each of these under an occupational level, that is; non-executive, executive, managerial, supervisory and laborer. The data collected was analysed using Excel software and presented using pie charts, graphs and tables. Several factors that contribute to delays were identified through literature review, namely; Improvements to standard drawing during construction stages, bad weather, contractors’ financial difficulties, construction mistakes and defective work, labour shortage, coordination problems, shortage of tools and equipment, material shortage and poor site management. Of those factors, the two most important factors were found to be; changes in designs and additional works.
