| dc.description.abstract | This study focused on the factors that influence intimate partner violence (IPV) among couples in Katanga slums, in Kawempe division, Kampala. The study objectives were; to examine the underlying factors that fuel intimate partner violence, to identify the consequences and the coping strategies in relation to IPV, and to establish the responses being used by male and female spouses to deal with IPV. The study was based on a sample of 50 primary respondents and 10 key informants. Data was collected through personal interviews and unstructured interviews with key informants. The study results revealed that the major factors underlying intimate partner violence were alcohol related issues, money related issues, power related issues and to some extent the differential socio-economic status of men and women in the community. The study also found that the consequences of intimate partner violence were; injuries, psychological effects on the victims and children in the family, loss of self-esteem, broken relationships and child neglect. Lastly the study revealed that most victims of the intimate partner violence referred their problem to their friends, family members and reported severe cases to police to handle. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the government or other related organizations that woks with men and women should focus on providing health and legal responses to intimate partner violence survivor .this prevents violence and involving community mobilization.
Media awareness campaigns that address social and cultural gender norms, participatory group discussion s and empowerment trainings and trainings around gender norms for both women and girls and men and boys should be done by the government. | en_US |
