dc.description.abstractWaste management is a global environmental issue which is a very significant problem in today’s world. There is a considerable amount of disposal of waste without proper segregation which has led to both economic and environment sufferings. It is still practiced in many cities. There is a tremendous amount of loss in terms of environmental degradation, health hazards and economic descend due to direct disposal of waste. It is better to segregate the waste at the initial stages where it is generated, rather than going for a later option which is inconvenient and expensive. There has to be appropriate planning for proper waste management by means of analysis of the waste situation of the area. Geographical Information System can be used as a decision support tool for planning waste management facilities. The research investigated the spatial distribution of solid waste management facilities in Kiwafu and Central wards of Entebbe Municipality with the help of G.I.S software. The main objective of this study was to experiment the integration of GIS as a planning tool in the distribution of solid waste management facilities in the study area. In this regard, the specific objectives were to investigate the distribution of solid waste facilities in the study area, to find out the functionality of solid waste collection facilities and to design strategies to optimize the distribution and functionality of the solid waste facilities in the study area. In order to achieve the study objectives, a composition of various methods were applied. These included, observation, photography, administering of questionnaires, interviews, literature review and use of maps and for data analysis. Results from the survey showed that the domestic waste was the highest waste generated in the study area; in addition the solid waste facilities are unevenly distributed within the two wards that is Kiwafu and Central where waste collection bins are more in the central Ward and Garbage skips being in Kiwafu Ward but unevenly distributed. The study further investigated the strategies to optimize the distribution and functionality of solid waste management facilities which included. Solid waste management using the bottom-top approach, citizen mobilization and environmental education, waste management legislation, infrastructure and management improvement, application of science and technology, monitoring and surveillance, policy and planning implications, strengthening waste management agency and government support. The research concluded that, urban waste management requires the concern of government, businessmen, politicians, religious organizations, civil servants, men, women, literate,' illiterate, the rich, the poor and a host of other tangible and intangible groups. All these must be brought together by government policy and legislation to work together like welfare officers to attack vigorously the urban waste problems.en_US
