This study was carried out about the contribution of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) on women’s livelihood and income in Pandwong division, Kitgum district. The purpose was for an academic award of Bachelors Degree of Social Work and Social Administration of Makerere University. I hope this report will also act as a tool with useful insights on informal savings scheme and its relationship to women income and welfare in general and creation of additional knowledge stock concerning informal savings facilities. This descriptive cross sectional case study employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods to allow triangulation of data and also to study in detail a single unit of analysis, the women in VSLAS aimed at answering the specific objectives of how the operation of VSLAs could contribute to women’s asset accumulation and income, women empowerment and communities and then its contributions to women’s resilience in the face of adversity especially those accruing from VSLAs. Data for the study was collected through interviews, questionnaires and held focus group discussion in the village of Alango West with 12 people and data was collected from 80 respondents (women) of which all were primary respondents. The research findings revealed that increased access to financial tools and the social aspect of the VSLAs help women to start up and invest in their business and that VSLAs were more successful in increasing the income from the existing small scale business and helped members to accumulate assets inform of livestock, land among others and it also had influence on the power dimensions on women households and community and thus playing a significant role in women’s coping abilities in terms of resilience by providing social network to them to cushion shocks thus enhancing their wellbeing. VSLAs in conclusion have facilitated women’s acquisition of assets, income and empowerment as most women in VSLAs were able to take out a loan for commercial business, pay school fees for their children, pay medical bills, acquire assets like land, livestock, bicycles among others. Women are in position to make decisions and participate in leadership positions and also boost their social networks that assist them when faced with dilemmas like paying back loans which facilitates their resilience. The study recommends that the government and other development agencies should replicate the expansion of VSLAs in the communities through increased sensitization about the significance of the savings and loans at grass root level and government alongside development agencies can fund these saving groups to boost their savings and other group activities so as to transform lives of its citizens especially the women.en_US
