This research project was mainly carried out to compare the factors considered when choosing scaffolding system to use. The researcher used both secondary data to review literature and primary data collected from the field is clearly presented and used to conclude. This involved construction professionals rating the factors so as the researcher identifies the key factors that should be considered when choosing scaffolding systems to use on building sites. This research also aimed at determining the reasons for usage of steel or timber scaffolding on building sites and to also know the level of usage of steel and timber scaffolding on building sites in Kampala. Data was collected from construction professionals on building sites where there was usage of scaffolding in all 5 divisions of Kampala. The findings show that the key factors include safety, duration of work, site conditions, height(s) to be reached and the intended use of scaffolding are the key factors considered according to construction professionals. Cost of using scaffolding was found to be of less importance than factors that affect safety and safe usage of scaffolding systems. Cost of using scaffolding (100%) and availability on the market (88%) were the most stated reasons for using timber scaffolding. 90% of the respondents used steel because it’s safe, ability to be used was the other reason respondents preferred to work with steel. The level of usage of timber scaffolding in Kampala is almost twice that of steel scaffolding mainly because timber is cheaper and readily available. Steel is used because it’s safe, durable, re-usable.en_US
