| dc.description.abstract | Introduction: It is well documented that Female Sex Workers (FSWs) either become sex workers when they have children and as a way of earning an income to take care of their children or they can have children when they are already FSWs. This study sought to explore the child care practices of FSWs with specific objectives of to examine the lived experiences of FSWs as parents, to find out interventions available and their contribution to FSWs and measures to improve the interventions for FSWs.
Methodology: The researcher used a descriptive design and employed a qualitative approach to obtain data. Interviews were used to obtain qualitative data which was analyzed thematically.
Findings: The study found out that FSWs face many challenges like financial constraints, health risks and poor health care, police harassment, stigma and discrimination, inadequate knowledge on parenting, inadequate education services, poor housing and a difficult environment. FSWs use different coping mechanisms to cope up with these challenges through using individual strengths, relying on friends and family and religion. The studies also found out FSWs have support systems like friends and neighbors who help them to take care of their children. NGOs and Government render help through provision of scholarships to the children and family planning services respectively
Conclusion and Recommendations: The study recommends that, since there is stigma and discrimination, Government and NGOs should put campaigns to sensitize the community so that there is a positive mindset about FSWs and their children Government should also put income generating activities for the FSWs to have a stable income as well as setting up programs to provide quality information on child parenting. | en_US |
