dc.description.abstractThis dissertation investigates and describes the concept of child marriage, it’s effects, the strategies put or that should be put in place to mitigate the vice of child marriage in Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja District. The study is based on the topic “child marriages and the challenges of mitigating the vice in Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja District”. It has chapter one which includes the background of the study, the problem statement, the general and specific objectives, the research questions, namely: what are the socio-economic effects of child marriage, what are the socio-economic strategies of mitigating the vice of child marriage and what are the challenges faced while trying to mitigate child marriage in Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja District? It also presents the significance of the study which helped to find out the effects of child marriage and how far have the strategies put in place helped to reduce on child marriages. The dissertation further presents the reviews of different authors about child marriage, the emerging issues in the literature in that the literature ignores the efforts at household, community and institutional interventions and most of the reviews in literature have been formed through government interventions which are not very effective in mitigating child marriage. The third chapter presents the methodology of the study and among these include the study designs, the area of study, the study population, sample size selections which took a qualitative research using the key informant interviews, the case study and focus group discussions, ethical considerations where the researcher had to seek informed consent of the respondents, ensuring that they are not harmed and their information is kept with the highest level of confidentiality. And Chapter four presents the analysis of data and interpretation discussion and findings where respondents provided their views of the effects of child marriage which included: poverty, domestic violence, risks of infection and many others and pointed out the strategies of mitigating the vice as sensitizing the parents and the community, strengthening the laws and many others and lastly presented the challenges of mitigating the vice which included: ineffective laws, misinterpretation of children’s rights and many others. And the last chapter presents the summary of findings and discussion and the limitations the researcher faced while carrying out the research, references and appendixesen_US
