| dc.description.abstract | The future development of areas in Kampala will depend on partial spaces, preservation and conservation of the present sense of place and the environment. Voids are spaces that are considered useless, underused, abandoned and also in between the public and the private realms. This research looks into the character and usage of voids in Kisugu informal settlement. The various voids that have generated due to neglect of planning and policy, and also the changing socio-economic functions attached to these spaces.
The research is majorly meant to cover up the enormous knowledge gap in the informal settlements of Kampala. The research is comprised of five chapters ranging from introduction which describes the background of the study, the statement of the problem, the scope, significance and justification of the study.
Literature review analyses the previous writers’ views on the different concepts of urban voids on how they understand urban voids their categories and uses. However, there is inadequate literature about urban voids, there few existing describe voids as future development pieces.
In the methodology chapter, the researcher discusses the study area and reasons for selecting the site, research methods including interviewing, sampling, observation, photography questionnaires and the data analysis techniques and lastly chapter four which focuses on field findings. The study identified four different types of voids existing in Kisugu for example corridors, transportation routes (access roads, foot paths and secondary roads), compounds playgrounds and gardens. These voids are both public, semi public and private spaces which can play different roles both socially, economically and emotionally to the residents of Kisugu and chapter five concludes the research and provides recommendations.
The voids should not be looked at as residue areas but rather as public areas that can rejuvenate an area. These spaces are used not only by designated users by also by outsiders, and pass by people.
