Title: Analysis of Industrial Sprawl and its implications to physical planning in Kampala city’s hinterland: A Case Study of the Jinja road Corridor. Through a descriptive and exploratory approach, and by review of documentary resources and literature, supplemented by empirical evidence from the case study, this dissertation analyses industrial sprawl and its implications to physical planning in Kampala city’s hinterland particularly along the Jinja road corridor stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga. The establishment and birth of the various individual and industrial complexes outside the designated industrial parks for example Namanve industrial park even when there are still vacant and undeveloped plots and its implications to physical planning forms the major focus of this research. The research study was carried out for a period of three months starting from September to November2019 and it captured information regarding industries established prior to this period and those established within this period along the Jinja road corridor outside the designated industrial parks stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga. The research study was intended to analyze industrial sprawl and its implications to physical planning in Kampala city’s hinterland particularly along Jinja road stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga. The research study was also intended to examine the location of industries and industrial complexes along Jinja road stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga and to map them out. The research study was also oriented towards examining the factors influencing the location of industries and industrial complexes along Jinja road stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga. The study also shows the physical planning challenges associated with industrial sprawl in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. The suggested applicable mitigation measures to the physical planning challenges associated with industrial sprawl in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area were also captured by the study. The significance of the study includes but are not limited to; Industrial sprawl demonstrates a threat for urban sustainability, since it indicates high level of land, water and energy consumption as well as increase pollutants and wastes with increased costs of provision of the necessary infrastructure related to industrial use over a sprawling establishment. Analysis of industrial sprawl and its implications to physical planning in Kampala city’s hinterland particularly along Jinja road stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga provided a benchmark literature for other scholars to stem from while undertaking similar studies as well as provided applicable suggestions to combat physical planning challenges associated with industrial sprawl. The study results benefitted me as the researcher since I was able to examine the factors that cause industrial sprawl as well as suggest applicable mitigation measures to physical planning associated with industrial sprawl. The study is a partial fulfilment of an award of a bachelor in physical Planning at Makerere University. The study results will also aid the responsible personnel charged with the task of designating places as industrial parks for instance physical planners, UMI, government with the relevant information regarding the impracticability of the designated areas as industrial parks and ways of how to combat the aftermath of the implications aroused by industrial birth outside these areas. It was therefore so important to undertake this study so as to be able to control industrial sprawl and its physical planning associated challenges as well as improve the environmental quality, living conditions of people and reduce government expenditure during the provision of the relevant industrial infrastructure. This investigation in particular undertook a mixed approach of research design. It married the qualitative and quantitative methods for both were discovered to be appropriate. Although the research seeks to analyze industrial sprawl and its implications to physical planning in Kampala city’s hinterland particularly along Jinja road stretching from Namanve industrial park to Namagunga, it also examined the ways of how to combat the physical planning challenges associated with industrial sprawl.
