Analysis of factors that influence students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University.
Abstract
This study was about analysis of factors that influence students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University. The objective was to assess the influence of; students’ performance in the previous level of education, parent’s socio-economic status on students’ choice of university. The study adopted both cross section research designs. The sample size for this study was 150 respondents from both Makerere University and Kyambogo University. An online structured questionnaire comprising of mostly closed ended questions and a few open ended was designed using Google forms and distributed to students to respond via students’ class WhatsApp groups. Analysis of data was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The researcher tested for relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable using Pearson chi-square test.
Study findings indicated that students’ performance in previous level of education had a significant influence on students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University at a p-value = 0.032 which is less than the critical value of 0.05. Findings also revealed that all items used to measure parent’s socio-economic status for example; parent’s occupation, highest level of education and average monthly income had no significant influence on students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University.
The study concluded that students’ performance in previous level of education has a significant influence on students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University while parent’s socioeconomic status did not have influence on students’ choice between Makerere University and Kyambogo University.
