dc.description.abstractThis study was carried out in Ssembabule Town. This study was aimed at establishing the level of awareness of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus 2 among people in Ssembabule Town specifically to establish the level of awareness of the schools and surrounding communities about SARS-CoV-2, the extent of adherence to the standard operating procedures in the reopened schools and the community and identify the challenges faced by schools and communities in adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures. The study findings indicated that 51% of the respondents were females while 49% of them were males, 24 out of 40 students (60%) considered were from a class of senior six while 40% of them were from senior four. The study findings also found that 63.6% of the administrators were from private schools while 36.4% were from government schools. All the respondents (100%) revealed that they know the disease called COVID-19, 81.6% of the respondents mentioned that handshakes and related body contacts with infected people transmits COVID-19, 29.3% indicated that hugging transmits the disease, 27.2% indicated that overcrowding with infected person transmits the disease. The study findings indicated that 81.5% of the respondents knew flu as a sign of COVID-19, 80.7% knew cough as a sign of COVID-19, 58.5% knew fever/High temperatures as a sign of COVID-19. The study findings indicated that 48.3% of the respondent got information about COVID-19 from the radios, 40.9% got the information from Television broadcasts, 15.4% from internet and newspapers respectively and 2.7% from posters and local health workers respectively. The study findings reported that 66.2% of the respondent put on masks while in public, 17.2% put on masks the whole day while 16.6 never put on masks at all, 79.9% of the respondents wash their hands many times a day, 48.3% of the respondents were sanitizing themselves, 41.9% of the respondents who said that they face challenges in the implementation of SoPs, they were facing the issue of masks making them uncomfortable, 25.8% complained of the requirements for SoPs being expensive for example masks, sanitizers, water, soap hence limiting implementation, 6.5% indicated that it is hard to monitor students in the implementation of SoPs. The study concluded that the level of awareness among the people in Ssembabule Town is high since almost they are aware of the disease, signs and symptoms, how it is transmitted and how to control it. More comfortable measures for preventing transmission of COVID-19 from one person to another should be availed for students since it is hard to implement for example social distancing and masks that make people uncomfortable.en_US
