ItemAppraisal of information activities of the Family Planning Association of Uganda(Makerere University, 1994) Kakai, MiriamThis research paper centres on the ways in which the Family Planning Association of Uganda disseminates its information about Family Planning throughout Uganda. It looks into the ways in which FPAU plans, implements and evaluates its information activities. "The source of each item of information is ultimately another person" and in this case its an organised body - FPAU. It acts as an information system though not fully installed. It facilitates the transfer of information from one person to another, which is essential for human development. The basis of the study, therefore, is to consolidate the concept of information work for efficient and effective information dissemination by highlighting the information activities of FPAU, identifying what can be added into the information network to ease dissemination, identifying the core causes of neglecting family planning in order to focus on them when conveying the message to the masses and highlighting on the communication skills used in other countries that have led to their success. The association plans for the future promise brighter results for the generation to come. This is highlighted in the findings of the research.

ItemDisease and treatment monitoring of malaria (DTMM): Case study - Ministry of Health(Makerere University, 2015-04) Mukiibi, Herbert ; Muwanguzi, HenryThe main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of integrating the use of cell-phones into a routine malaria prevention and control programme, to improve the management of malaria among an under-served population in Uganda. The disease and treatment monitoring of malaria (DTMM) system, consisted of malaria patient investigations and following up for treatment compliance and patients’ symptoms. The methods used for data collection from the respondents were the Interviews and observations which helped to develop web-based and mobile technologies as a proof of concept, to replace the paper-based activities that malaria staff used in treating and caring for malaria patients in the villages. The system generated text and graph messages for a summary of malaria cases, basic statistics, and automatically fed to predetermined malaria personnel for situation analysis. The system provides a much better report of results about malaria patients. Compared to paper-based data, the mobile-phone-based malaria follow-up rates by malaria staff improved significantly. The module was successfully integrated and functioned as part of the malaria prevention and control programme. Despite the bias inherent in sensitizing malaria workers to perform active malaria follow-up using the mobile device, the study proved for its feasibility and the extent to which community healthcare personnel in the low resource settings could potentially utilize it efficiently to perform routine duties, even in remote areas.

ItemA web based drug distribution information management system(Makerere University, 2015-07-10) Kyompaire, Joynus ; Matovu, Henry ; Kyeyune, Musa EmamanuelManagement at Abacus Pharma (Africa) Limited takes a lot of time to confirm with its specific branches in Uganda about whether the expected drugs correspond to the actual delivered drugs. In case the expected drugs mismatch the actual received drugs up on delivery due to theft of drugs while under distribution, management may not realize it fast in order to follow up the causes of the drug loss. This was solved by the web based drug distribution information management system that can easily provide timely feedback to the head office on the human drugs distributed to the registered branches like Nakawa, William street (I and II), Wilson road (I and II), namirembe road, Johnstone street, Jinja, Arua, Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara and Lira branches. The researchers achieved the objectives of the project by carrying out a study using data collection tools like questionnaires and interview guides. The project was designed using data flow diagrams and entity relationship diagrams. It was developed with HTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript and MySQL. The project provides an assurance that the sender can be provided with the proof of human drug delivery and the recipient is provided with a proof of the sender’s identity so that none can deny the involvement in the human drugs distribution. The researchers recommend that the project can be improved in future to using mobile technology in information dissemination.

ItemSMS based ticket booking management system for cinemas(Makerere University, 2017) Mudoola, Rogers ; Migadde, HuzairuThe main objective of this project was to develop an SMS based ticket booking management system and specifically to design a model for the SMS based ticket booking management system for cinemas. During the study period questionnaires, observations and interviews were very instrumental in helping us gather information from the various participants. In order to solve the problems and achieve our objectives, the creation and use of SMS functionality on the created system was necessary. A data flow diagram and ERD helped us to design a model for the system. This system improves operations by making it quite easy to perform and it's also fast since one uses a computer or mobile phone compared to the manual system that slows work since everything is done manually. We therefore recommend that cinemas like Cineplex garden city should use SMS based ticket booking system where codes for movies are sent to customers, this reduces the time taken to book or get tickets.
