    Students' Class Attendance Tracking System

    The students’ tracking attendance system has been established to monitor students’ attendance reliably in various session throughout their time at the university. It mainly consists of a fingerprint scanner which captures the students’ thumbprints and the attendance data is displayed on the mobile application interface. A database was constructed to store all system information about the students, courses and lecturertimes. Random students have been assigned unique ids for each and their fingerprints captured and stored in the reader. They were also assigned to specific courses attendance system page through the interface. Random information about lecture times, courses and departments' codes have been inserted into the database for testing. Attendance of previous students has been taken at different times for testing. At each time attendance of students has been obtained correctly and a .csv file is generated inform of a reporting displaying students’ attendance.

    Smart supply: An analytics tool to support strategic growth in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

    1.0. Problem Statement Wholesale distributors occupy a middle position in the supply chain between manufacturers and secondary distributors or retailers for a wide range of durable and non-durable goods, industrial goods, and consumer products. This positioning presents unique challenges to their profitability. In today’s Uganda marketplace, where supply networks are becoming increasingly complex and customers demand more choices, faster fulfilment, and lower price, wholesale distributors often find themselves squeezed from both sides. Increasingly, satisfying diverse customers means providing more custom products. A growing number of items and stock keeping units can add complexity and cost to inventory management. Due to daily rising competition, retailers can, and do, demand faster service, lower prices, and compliance with requirements basing on the end users’ needs. To survive and thrive in this pressured supply chain position, a wholesale distribution company needs to control already tight margins by increasing efficiency and eliminating waste. Yet many distributors find themselves hindered by information delays, excess inventory, and purchasing information that’s locked in the minds of individual employees. In order for a wholesale distributor to gain more profit, he would require to • Manage stock to avoid excess inventory • Know who his profitable customers are and devise strategies to retain them. • Identify the amount of products to stock based on customer demand trends. • Identify the trend of service to be provided such as when to offer discounts and to which customer category. 2.0. Proposed solution An analytics tool that shall provide strategic information to the wholesale distributors using analytics and alerts to help them understand their customer purchasing preferences, make decisions vi based on respective customer categories, track and provide the right discounts or offers to the right customers at the right times, identify their best customers and their demands, track spending patterns of their customers and their product preferences, and identify the marketing campaigns that shall bring in the high-spending customers. By gaining insights on the customers and the products that contribute to the business, this solution guarantees to increase profit and revenue. 3.0. Scope The proposed solution will be limited to Uganda and it shall focus mainly on providing strategic analytic information to wholesale distributors in Kikuubo Business Centre.

    Assessment of the records security system in Entebbe municipal council registry

    This is a report from the research carried out under the topic "Assessment of the records security system in Entebbe Municipal Council registry," from May to July 2018. This report consists of five chapters containing all details of the research process from the introduction to the study, to its literature review, and then to the methodologies that were used in the study. The presentation and discussion of the data collected from the study are also included here together with the summary, conclusion and recommendations of the study. Chapter one gives the introduction to the study, the problem statement, as well as the background, aim, objectives, scope, significance, and justification of the study. Chapter two, on the other hand, contains the literature review in which we find descriptions of records, records security, the records security systems as well as the threats to records and possible solutions as discussed by various authors. The third chapter contains descriptions of methods, tools, techniques and approaches that will be used in the study. So, this chapter contains the methods of data collection and analysis. The fourth chapter comes next afterwards and it contains the presentations of the findings along with the discussion of the findings on the types of records in EMC registry, the state of the current records security system in EMC registry, and lastly the challenges identified with that system together with the suggested solutions to the identified challenges. The last chapter, five, consists of the study's summary, conclusion and recommendations as well as the areas for further research at EMC. Lastly, there are various appendices and references in relation to the information in the five chapters of the report. There is an interview guide, observation guide, letter from and the head of department all attached as appendices. Therefore, the report has all descriptions and specifications for the purpose of understanding how the research was conducted and concluded.

    Assessing records storage and security at Entebbe police station

    A study was carried on assessing records storage and security at Entebbe Police Station with the study objectives which were to establish the current status of records storage and security, to find out how storage and security of records are managed, to identify challenges of Records storage and security and to make suggestions for the best practices in records storage and security at Entebbe Police Station. The study purposively sampled seven records staff (one records manager, two assistant records managers, one stores manager, system administrator, records secretary and the archivist. Data was collected using the interview, observation and document analysis. The study revealed that Entebbe Police station used majorly the manual records management system where most of the records were passed on hand to hand and kept in hardcopy paper files wooden shelves, cabinets, boxes, sorters and drawers. The Police station also had some few electronic records which were generated at the station which included reports, charge sheets, nominal roll and police pay roll. It was further revealed that the Police Station also had many challenges in records storage and security which included inadequate storage space, inadequate trained staff, inadequate storage equipment, biological agents, missing records, dust, computer viruses, use of insecure locks, lack of records management policy, lack of security technology, improper disposal of records and obsolete computers. However it was recommended that the Police Station should set up policies on records management, carry out Staff training ,have access controls, use identification systems, install security monitoring systems, digitize its records, develop a records management policy, design a disaster management plan, install security software ,back up its information and expand the storage areas. It was concluded that records storage and security at Entebbe Police station was still very weak and therefore needed to be greatly funded and considered as part of an integral records management function. Through that the Police station will be better off in records storage and in terms of records safety.

    An online voting system (Tulonde) for COCIS

    This project report presents An Online Voting System (Tulonde) that is aimed at easing the process of carrying out elections at COCIS. The main objective of the project was to develop an Online Voting System (Tulonde) that will ensure and enable a speedy voting process, which is secure, convenient and with minimal chances of irregularities and influence. Here we present a more convenient system which will ease the work of organizing and structuring the elections and consequently increase voter participation. The system has been developed in accordance to the methodology of Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) with stages ranging from requirements specification to the entire validation of the system. Information and data for system study was collected using questionnaires. For analysis and design of the system, Unified modelling language comprising of use case and class diagrams was used to was used to model the various components and their interactions. To implement the system several technologies were used and this include PHP (Hypertext Processor), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), JavaScript, HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and for the database MySQL was used. The resultant outcome for this research project was an Online Voting System (Tulonde).

    Gym information management system : A case study of Grand Global Gym

    The study mainly focused on improving the gym information management for both the customers and the gym staff members. It is known that exercise is important. Exercise has a great impact in the body as it has all sorts of benefits. Physical activities are very helpful not only on making people fit but also on improving one’s personality. If they have a healthy body, they can be productive in daily life. The methodologies used in collecting the data included reading existing literature about information management and communication systems, use of questionnaires which included interviewing gym managers for example the management of the gym at grand global hotel. Using the above mentioned methods, we found out that the gym used both manual based platforms and computer based technologies to store information about the customers. The manual based communication used was characterized by hard paper copies to register customers who have attended the gym session and tick alongside their names. The computer based technological platforms for gym related issues communication included social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp for example you can contact the gym using their WhatsApp number to make inquiries. The proposed system was designed using data and process models which included a class diagrams, sequence diagrams and use case diagrams. The final project implementation which was aided with WAMP software tool, WAMP is a package of independently-created programs installed on computers that use a Microsoft Windows operating system. The system was developed to run on Apache, MySQL and one of PHP, Perl or Python. PHP is used for the server programming which is basically queries used to link the website to the database. The Gym Information Management System was tested using various test methods for example; user testing, acceptance testing and integration testing. To provide a good quality of service to people, fitness gym should have an organized management system that will provide convenience to their staff to perform their work more efficiently. The proposed system will give the list of exercises and it will keep records of gym members, attendance of gym employees, inventory and the payment of bills of the customers. This helps in monitoring daily activities in the gym.

    Student project monitoring system

    Monitoring individual student contribution towards their projects is difficult for supervisors during Final Year Project Implementation. In the current system of monitoring students Final Year Projects, supervisors arrange physical meetings with the different groups they supervise to monitor their progress in the Final Year Project, however, it is difficult for the supervisors to know each students contribution towards their group project as you may find it is one student in the group who is actively participating in the development of the project. Therefore is need for a system that can provide a more effective monitoring of student contribution towards their projects. To solve the above problem, we have decided to develop a student project monitoring system to aid in the monitoring of final year projects of students. The system works in a way that supervisors and student register themselves on the system. Students are allowed to form groups and these groups are assigned supervisors by the Admin. Students can log in into the system as individuals and submit links to their Github or source code files to enable the supervisor to monitor each students contribution. This report describes the development of a Student Project Monitoring System, a web application designed to help in monitoring individual Student contribution towards their projects. It describes the problem being addressed, objectives intended for the project and a review on the functionality of existing related systems.

    Assessment of classification and storage of records systems : A case of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda (PRU) registry

    The research looked at the classification and storage of records in the records registry, Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. The study aimed at examining the record classification used at the ministry, the most effective classification type used, the types of filling systems are in place, how effective are the filling systems used, then the challenges faced by records staff in classifications and filling and finally the classification and filling systems are suitable for the parliament. The researcher used a cross sectional survey design with majorly qualitative methods. Data was collected through interview guides. Data was analyzed and presented qualitative analysis techniques of paraphrasing and narrative description; among the findings those are effective implementation of records, classification and storage in the records registry enhances arranged and organized department so that it brings proper records file classification practice positively. The study found that an assessment of classification and filling system of records in Parliament of the Republic of Uganda which included; the current status of classification and filling of records in Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, these were alphabetical, numeric, alpha-numerical and subject filing records. How these classifications and filling of records were managed in Parliament of the Republic of Uganda and it was found that they were manually managed. There were the challenges encountered in classification and storage of records in the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda which included; records go missing, piling big volumes of records, lost files and documents, storage space, unauthorized access, poor management, legibility and lack of centralization. The study concluded that records classifications and storage at the ministry were in a poor state, which lead to the poor. On the classification/filing at the study concluded; alphabetical, numeric, alpha-numerical and subject filing, they were managed manually. Work was still done manually in some offices since there is lack of appropriate and up to date equipment’s. This slowed down the records storage and retrieval. The researcher also recommends the employees must embrace new changes introduced to so that their work to be made very easy and enjoyable. When this is done it will attract more records users which will boost the reading behavior of the available records.

    Assessing preservation of records at the Jinja district local government

    The study was undertaken to assess the preservation of records at the Jinja District Local Government Registry. The study was based on the following objectives to identify the types of records preserved at Jinja District Local Government ,find out how preservation of records is done at Jinja District Local Government, to identify the challenges faced in records preservation at Jinja District Local Government, make suggestions so as to improve preservation records at Jinja District Local Government. The study further used different methodologies to collect data, interpreted it and presented it for more understanding the researcher used the qualitative approach and then adopted the case study. Data was collected using the interview guide, observation guide and a sample of ten staff members was used to collect information on the preservation of records and the study majorly focused on the primary sources like the interview guide to come up with conclusions. The findings of the study identified that the JDLGR preserves the following records; personnel records, reports, administrative records, policies and financial records. The study revealed that the preservation of records of records is done by storing the records in file cabinets and acid free boxes, prevention of sunlight from affecting the records is done by use of curtains so that the records serve for as long as they are needed and in case of fire out breaks they have fire extinguishers. The study identified various challenges facing preservation of records at JDLGR which included lack of storage equipments, limited storage space, lack of a disaster preparedness plan, limited staff. Such challenges make it had to preserve records for as long they are needed. Therefore the study recommended the following; coming up with a disaster preparedness plan, provision of adequate quality funds, employing more registry staff members, increasing the storage space so as to overcome the challenges facing preservation of records at the JDLGR

    Disease detection in poultry using machine learning

    Diseases in poultry farming have severe and detrimental health effects to poultry hence leading to death of the birds and loses for the bird owners if no remedies are provided. The process of diagnosis which involves the use of a specialist can be quite costly and may be dawdling since appointments have to be made with veterinary doctors to get treatment for ones poultry. Poultry farmers are unable to keep track of the health status of their flock in order to prevent diseases through early diagnosis for diseases such as coccidiosis that can be detected and treated.

    Automation of ticket issuance system

    In this era of science and technology, mobile applications are used widely and used in each and every step of modern businesses. Unluckily, developing countries like Uganda are far behind in using the internet or web based applications. This project will develop a “Mobile Application for purchasing tickets for football matches” in Uganda, and to be more specific, it’s to automate the manual native ticket issuance system. Application users will have to register their details for logging or accessing the news page. The implementation of the system required will use Flutter and Firebase. The entire team will work together to develop a mobile application for the ticket match processing. In future developments, the application will efficiently include more Ugandan teams and stadiums, developing the servers, payment protection and many features. The research will include payment solutions available for such a system could use to accept customer payments. The project will take the best feature of existing online paying websites and improve them and will implement new feature that it is felt will improve customers experience with the site.

    E-complaint reporting system a case study of Makerere Police Station

    This is an Electronic Crime Reporting System software which is well accessible to the general public and the Uganda police. The major problem this system is solving is delay in reporting crimes as the issue of reporting crime has been a challenge especially in the cities like Kampala, Gulu, Jinja, Mbarara due to the fact that sometimes crimes are committed mainly at night when most police stations are far from the crime scene. Thus letting the culprit escape before the crimes are reported. This has become one of the biggest problems to the Uganda Police in managing and keeping law and order for the general public. It has also made the general public to lose interest in reporting crimes. Therefore we have come up with this system so that people can report crimes at anytime from anywhere within the city of Kampala and hopefully other cities as well.

    A land search information system. A case of land information systems in UGANDA

    In this study, a land Search Information System was implemented for the people of Uganda, to enable them easily, make land title searches and also get informed on issues concerning land. This is because there is a high rise of land conflicts in the country which has raised due to the fact that people are not well educated on matters concerning land and also making land title searches today in the current systems is slow and in- efficient thus it takes a lot of time which creates more room for illegalities like title forgery which results into a lot of fraud during the process of land purchase which in the end results into land conflicts since par- ties will end up fighting each other claiming to both be having land titles attached to the same piece of land In this study we used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected using interviews, observation, documentation review and focus group discussion which methods were used for data collec- tion from 30 respondents and also, we had to get sensitive data from the ministry of lands that was to be used during system integration. In objective one, we collected both primary and secondary data, which was analyzed using excel spread- sheets and the user requirements were determined. In objective two, the system was designed using data flow diagrams (DFDs) and enhanced entity relationship diagrams (ERDs). In objective three, the system was developed using technologies such as React Js, NodeJS, Bootstrap, CSS, HTML, JavaScript and MySQL among others. In objective four, the system was tested and validated. The findings of the study are of great significance to researchers, Makerere University and Ministry of lands housing and urban develop- ment.

    An Augmented Reality mobile Application for improving the online shopping experience

    The purpose of this project was to develop an augmented reality mobile application which will enhance the current online shopping experience, and also understand the consumer adoption of this technology considering aspects such as attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral controls and behavioral intention while using this emerging technology. Our project research followed a quantitative cross-sectional approach, and the data collection was made possible through a survey questionnaire targeting online retail or non-participants in Kampala city, Uganda. A sample of 120 respondents was used of which 100 usable questionnaires were returned. Furthermore, the analysis of the data was data within the Google Forms Responses’ dashboard that basically visually describes all the responses in terms of pie charts and bar graphs. An augmented reality mobile application was designed and developed for a selected online retail business, and that was a furniture store. Our respondents interacted with the mobile application and usage was validated thereby finding a significant relationship existing between behavioral intention and consumer adoption of our augmented reality feature that will enhance their online shopping experience. The consequent output of our project study was therefore an augmented reality gateway or feature that can be added to existing online shopping platforms to improve their online shopping experience. Our project also adds to the existing literature by detangling the relationships between attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral controls and behavioral intention on consumer adoption of Augmented Reality to improve their online shopping experience. It can be concluded from our project that attitude is the most significant predictor of behavioral intention to adopt to the use of Augmented Reality, followed by perceived behavioral controls and subjective norms; and intention has a reasonable influence on the consumers’ final decision to adopt the use of Augmented Reality to improve their overall online shopping experience.

    Tool for locating printing services in Makerere University

    Information technology industry is one of the fast growing sectors in the world making it more vital. This is because it has simplified tasks being done and helped find solutions to a variety of problems within different societies. Printing is an essential service in a setting like Makerere University, this is because students on a daily basis do course works and other related activities like reports, proposals among others, all these need to be always printed to be presented for either marking or evaluation by their respective lecturers, however many students especially the new entrants have faced a very big challenge in locating some of these printery service centers. This is mostly because most printery stations have no clear names and directions to easily locate them. This report therefore presents a solution to this problem faced by many first time Makerere University students when searching for printery services within the premises of the university. To come up with this solution, we used qualitative methods such as interviews to collect data from the printery station owners. Which we analyzed critically, and used the data along with rapid application development methodology to implement our proposed solution. The proposed solution was successfully implemented and the use of this application will heavily benefit the students with easier navigation for printery services wherever they are within the university. This report is divided into 6 chapters where the first contains the project introduction, the second contains the literature review, the third contains the methodology, the fourth contains the findings, system analysis and design details, the fifth contains the project implementation, testing and validation and lastly, the sixth with the conclusions, recommendations and future research.

    Sales management system for Maganjo Grain Millers

    In this study, a sales management system was implemented for Maganjo Grain Milers and the associates, to automate activities and services in areas of sales, recruitment, inventory. This is because there are inconsistencies in storing sales data and other company details due to use of manual approach of keeping such data to delivery services to clients in Uganda, especially in Kawempe, Maganjo sub-division- Kampala which was used as the case study because it was conveniently accessed by the researchers. The study used both qualitative and quantitative ap- proaches. Data was collected using interviews and questionnaire methods and tools like self- administered questionnaires and interview guides, which were used for collecting data from 10 respondents who were managers, administrators, cashiers and customers. In objective one, the researcher collected both primary which was analyzed using excel spreadsheets and the user requirements were determined. In objective two, the system was designed using data flow dia- grams (DFDs) and enhanced entity relationship diagrams (ERDs). In objective three, the sys- tem was developed using technologies such as Bootstrap, CSS, HTML, JavaScript and MySQL among others. In objective four, the system was tested and validated. The findings of the study are a great significance to researchers, Maganjo grain millers’ managers, and administrators. The study recommends that a mobile native application with an offline version and push notifications should be implemented in future for wider remote accessibility for all Maganjo grain millers'.

    Vehicle registration portal

    Motor vehicle registration in Uganda is a very tedious process mixed with a couple of hurdles that based on the statistics gathered indicated that most people sought the assistance of middlemen in the whole process. Manual systems are almost ineffective given the changes and development in technology. There have been instances of wrong fee allocation, and excessive time consumption. The study was based in the Kampala divisions of Rubaga, kawempe, and Nakawa with the aim of increasing productivity within the registration processes. The development was based on the single sign-on and Role-Based Access Control mechanism. There is also the existence of similar systems like that of URA, there is CVR, and that of West Virginia (VRS) USA. There are many advantages to the use of digital registration systems like increased access to information, however, there are some bottlenecks that could impede the full adoption of such as system in Uganda, for instance, the big gap in the digital divide. A number of methods were used to conduct the research like questionnaires and interviews as the primary tools for raw data collection. Analysis of this data was done using tools like excel and google analytics. Numerous modeling processes were used like DFD as well as a rapid development method was used. Different server applications such as XAMPP were deployed to fulfill the full system functionality supported by various programming languages like PHP. Statistics gathered to show that a large number of the youth population are the most actively involved in the process with the majority being males at 61.30%, a number of weaknesses were also identified like too much paperwork, and involvement of middlemen. System implementation was achieved by the use of different application technologies like JavaScript. The architecture was based on the web server architecture, use case diagrams, DFD, ERD, and logical and physical designs were used to design the system. Our hope is that in the near future, the system is fully developed so as to meet its intended use.

    In this study, a prisoner information management system was implemented for the prisons of Uganda, to easily track and access prisoners information from different geographical locations This is because most prisons in Uganda still use the traditional system of pen and papers, to keep track of prisoner records. This system takes long to finish a single transaction and this has led to loss of information of some cases (crimes files), insecurity and data redundancy. Similarly, some cases have been reported where some prison staff connives with clients (victims) to change and hide some information or files hence leading to compromising the evidence of the matter. This has consequently resulted in time wastage to handle cases, increased corruption and insecurity of important files hence making the whole process costly. Also, when reports are needed especially about prisoners, it takes a long time and, therefore, makes it hard for Prison Management to take urgent decisions. This has created a lot of loopholes in the system because there is no tracking and/or monitoring of the information available in the different Departments and there are no security measures in place to safe guard the available information. This necessitated automating the system to make it more efficient and effective. There was close study of the existing manual file-based system that was in use, it was compared to the proposed system. A prototype of a proposed system was developed to ease data access, security and retrieval for instant report production by the prison management. The prototype was developed using MySQL database, PHP, CSS, JavaScript and HTML.
