ItemActive learning, student commitment and academic performance among secondary school students in Kawempe Division(Makerere University, 2019-10) Ketula, AdikinThe purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between active learning, student commitment and academic performance among secondary school students in Kawempe Division. The study adopted a correlation research design. A sample of 50 students(23 males and 27 females)were selected for the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to choose respondents.Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires which were analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS). Results showed a negative significant relationship between active learning and student commitment(r=–.428**, p=002);there was no significant relationship between student commitment and academic performance as well as no significant relationship between active learning and academic performance. It was therefore recommended that administrators should facilitate independent, critical and creative thinking in students.They should encourage effective collaboration, active participation and discussions amongst students which are components of active learning

ItemStudent engagement, motivation and academic performance among students of St. Johns Secondary School in Mukono District(Makerere University, 2019-09) Namuddu, DorothyThe study was carried out with the aim of identifying the levels of student engagement, Motivation and Academic performance among secondary school students. The study used a descriptive research survey design where by qualitative and quantitative methods were used. The sample population included both male and female students. The study involved 49 respondents who were students of St John ’s Secondary school Mukono. Data was collected mainly through the use of administered questionnaires. The findings revealed that student engagement is not significantly related to motivation due to the difficulties in learning, external events, rebellion, boredom and peer pressure. Motivation does not influence academic performance because students often feel detached from their actions that cause them lack motivation to complete their task. Student engagement has no significant relationship with academic performance implying that student engagement beliefs do not affect academic performance. It was recommended that Parents, relatives, guardians and other care takers should take an active role in providing their children with favorable psychological and emotional environment at home first so they will grow up with a strong sense of engagement, motivation which will enable them to augur in academic pursuits.

ItemSubstance abuse, self-esteem and academic performance among adolescents(Makerere University, 2019-09) Linda, IsabellaThe aim of the study was to examine the relationship between substance abuse, self esteem and academic performance among adolescents. The study was conducted at Kololo secondary school located in Kampala District. A correlation study design was used as 70 school going adolescent students participated in the study. Semi structured questionnaire were the main tools in data collection and data was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) Pearson’s correlation co-efficient(r) was used to determine the level of significant relationship between substance abuse and academic performance. However results revealed that there was no significant relationship between substance abuse and self esteem as well as self esteem and academic performance among adolescents as swell as self esteem
