Abstract
This study investigates into the role of public transport in meeting the urban mobility needs of
vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income communities,
in urban areas. Chapter One introduces the study, outlining its objectives, research questions,
and the significance of exploring how public transport systems address the unique needs of
vulnerable populations.
Chapter Two provides a review of relevant literature, discussing key concepts, theories, and
previous studies related to urban mobility, accessibility, and social inclusion. This chapter
highlights the gaps in current research and establishes the foundation for the study.
Chapter Three explains the methodology adopted for the research. A mixed-methods approach
was used, combining surveys, interviews, and field observations to collect both quantitative
and qualitative data. This approach ensured a comprehensive understanding of the challenges
faced by vulnerable groups in accessing public transport.
Chapter Four presents the findings and discussions. The results reveal significant barriers, such
as high costs, inadequate infrastructure, and limited accessibility features, which
disproportionately affect the mobility of vulnerable groups. The discussions analyze these
findings in relation to the literature, providing insights into how public transport systems can
be improved to serve these populations better.
Chapter Five concludes the study and provides recommendations. The recommendations focus
on improving the accessibility, affordability, and inclusivity of public transport systems through
policy changes, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced service delivery. The chapter also
emphasizes the importance of involving vulnerable groups in the planning and decision-making
processes for public transport.
This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on urban mobility and provides
practical solutions to enhance the inclusivity and effectiveness of public transport systems for
vulnerable groups.
