    Abstract
This research was carried out to investigate and show how proverbs in a literary text influence the development of themes as well as other literary elements such as characters and also the stylistic devices embedded in the proverbs themselves. From the research carried out I found out that some few scholars have tried to talk about the role played by proverbs in the development of themes but only as a glimpse in their wider research; and I have also learnt that few people have given this topic much attention and that is why it is so important for me to have the topic of my research as the role played by proverbs in the development of themes in a literary text, specifically the text No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe.
