Effects of integrating secular education in church of Uganda founded primary schools: case study of Kampala district
Abstract
This study sought to investigate the effects of integrating secular education in church of Uganda founded primary schools using the case study of Kampala District. The specific objectives of the study were: to examine the influence of foundation bodies on teachers motivation in primary schools of Kampala district, the influence of foundation bodies on coordination of school activities in Kampala district and the current contribution of foundation bodies towards the development of primary schools in Kampala district. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. Data was analyzed using the thematic approach and descriptive statistics. Qualitative approach aimed at obtaining data expressed in non-numerical terms. Qualitative approach provided ways of discerning, examining, comparing and contrasting, and interpreting meaningful patterns or themes. Qualitative approach involved examining the assembled relevant data to determine how research questions were answered at hand. Quantitative data analysis helped to analyze and categorize frequencies and percentages. Simple descriptive tabulations were used for quantitative analysis. The results of this study found that, Foundation Bodies never reduced the powers of the teachers and parents. The respondents reported that they had influence in the management of the school and were involved in the coordination of various activities. They further noted that the Board members, parents and teachers were involved in management of different school departments and they have supreme powers to take decisions. Participation in decision making gave the concerned parties the powers to influence planning and management of the school activities. The parents reported that they were always invited for PTA (Parents Teachers Association) meetings where they discussed the financial management of the schools, plans and school budgets other development related programs. It was also revealed that the parents were pleased when they are involved in school activities. They reported that their involvement in the activities ensured transparency and effective management of school fund. This Study researcher recommends that the District Education officer should monitor and follow up the initial plans; government should fully participate in all school programs and supervise the current contribution of RFGs in the development of primary schools on structures and performance of church founded schools in Kampala District Uganda.
