Metaphor in selected Luganda fables as retold by the contemporary Baganda
Abstract
The present study seeks to examine the kinds of metaphors used by the Contemporary Baganda in retelling Luganda fables. The study is informed by the view that language changes with time. Despite the process being a gradual one, changes are registered nevertheless. The data studied was collected through asking respondents to tell a story (fable) that they recalled. In doing so, they
were recorded and the language used was analysed. Fables, which have been adapted into songs and videos were also studied. These were available on YouTube. The findings from the research indeed portrayed that new terms, which relate to the way of life of the contemporaries were heavily in use. These formed the basic distinction of direct and conceptual metaphors. While doing a more detailed analysis of these oral forms, patterns emerged that have been categorized for easier comprehension. Key words: metaphor, fable, contemporary, Baganda, conceptual, direct.
