A research report submitted to College of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of liberal and Performing Arts, Department of Performing Arts and Film in partial fulfilment of the award of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Film of Makerere universityen_US
Research was carried out about how music dance and drama has been used to inspire the girl child in the greater Ankore and Kigezi sub regions of Uganda and the objectives of the study were; To find out the impact of performing arts on society, to find out the problems girls face using music, dance and drama and to suggest solutions to the problems using performing arts. The study purposely selected a total number of 10 respondents and that is 4 graduates’ ladies, 4 current university students’ two music, dance, poetry and drama coaches a male and a female. Data was collected using interviews and non-participatory observation. It continued to reveal the challenges girls encounter as they grow which are both physical and psychological and it shows how participating in the performing arts and their influence has acted as therapy to the depression and stress these challenges bring up. The study more so shows how girls have benefitted from music dance and drama platforms that come up in our communities for example, Easter and Christmas productions in churches, the national school’s music dance and drama festivals and national public holiday celebrations like women’s day celebration performances, national day of the girl child and Independence Day. It also shows the types of music and genres that have been an inspiration of the girl child ranging from the classical which includes folk songs, traditional chants like Ekyevugo in Ankore, lullabies, and traditional dances to contemporary arts which are originally composed pieces sang at school and traditional marriage functions and ceremonies like Kuhingira and weddings among others Lastly, this study continues to put-up recommendations to parents, guardians ,sponsors and caretakers to let their daughters girls exploit their talents and avoid discouraging them that the performing arts are wastage of time and a bad influence to society in terms of moral decay which is a lie yet they are in fact stepping stones to exposure and an inspiration to hard work and commitment hence building of confidence that helps the beneficiaries attain success which in the end brings a social, economic and infrastructural transformation and change not only in our communities but the entire nation.en_US
