ItemDance as a Tool for Social Behavioral Change among Children(Makerere University, 2017-09-06) Namutaaya, Ddembe KevinaABSTRACT This study examines dance as a tool for social behavioral change among children and the youth. Using a case study of Rainbow House of Hope Uganda – a non- governmental organisation that takes care of vulnerable children, the investigation does not only position dance as a means, and a method of rehabilitation, but also opens discussions on the very core essence of dancing, which if put in analytical lenses is in the very center of many day today life activities of children. The main objective of this study was to study how Dance can be used as a tool for social behavioral change and the supporting objectives were; (i) To assess how dance is used as a tool for social behavioral change among the children at Rainbow House of Hope Uganda (RHU). (ii) To assess the benefits of using dance as a tool for social behavioral change among the children of RHU and (iii) To establish the constraints of using dance as a tool for social behavioral change of the newly recruited children at RHU. Many cosmopolitan dance practitioners and scholars in Uganda today have not only given basis for the importance of the same but have also asserted its contribution to the change of attitudes among children (See Boorman 1973; Raily 1984) Paulo Freire (1973), Sherrill Barryman Miller (1988) and Julie McDonald (1991) further explained the educative essence of dance in relation to behavioral change in youths and children. Maldonado (2012) however, gave an insight into the way dace changes lives by giving an epic explanation of how dance changed and transformed lives of children in El Salvador and through his article the researcher had a clear insight of the usefulness of dance in relation to behaviors of teenagers. In the study, the researcher analyses in depth the use and process of using dance as a tool of social behavioral change in youths and she goes further to specifically look at the case study which is Rainbow House of Hope Uganda in chapter three. She discusses the study findings like the strong attachment dance has towards behavioral change of youths and children and also she goes on to make conclusions and recommendations to the Rainbow House of Hope like having a stronger hand in educating the children and she also points out areas for further research for example how dance enhances certain behavioral patterns and using other case studies of other dance schools and companies.

ItemSuccession planning, conflict resolution and survival of family businesses(Makerere University, 2018) Luwemba, AndrewThe purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between succession planning. Conflict resolutions and survival of family business around Kampala Uganda. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 116 respondents who were running the different family businesses in Kampala. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and after it was entered into Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) computer program and hypotheses tested using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r). Thus, according to the study, findings revealed that family managed businesses skewed more towards the trading sector. Additionally, findings showed that male gender dominance is still owning and managing family businesses and mostly those between 25-35 years respondents were majority. Lastly, Pearson correlation results revealed that a significant positive relation existed between succession planning and family conflict resolution; whereas there was no significant relationship between succession planning and survival of family business as well as between family conflict resolution and survival of family business. Basing on the findings, family owned businesses should define a very clear succession strategy with key directions. But such a strategy can be rendered ineffective if family affairs are not put in order. Therefore, it is essential to have an agreed-upon strategic succession plan and a transparent mechanism to manage matters related to family members, their accountability, management of conflicts and disagreements among them.

ItemParental separation, self esteem and substance abuse among adolescents(Makerere University, 2018) Namakula, LucyThis dissertation study examines the relationship between parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse among adolescents. Drawing from existing literature, parental separation has shown to be one of the adverse challenges that many adolescents face as they navigate life. Most of them fail to cope positively having the separation of their parents rub on their self-esteem and drive them to abuse substances to cope with the challenges it presents. To achieve the purpose of this study, questionnaires addressing parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse were administered to 100 adolescents, ages 15 to 20, selected randomly. The results of the study underscore the importance of parental separation as a risk factor for substance abuse and low self-esteem among adolescents and neither does self-esteem significantly influence the involvement of adolescents in substance abuse. While the results suggest otherwise from the literature, it is still important to stress the need to prepare adolescents for parental separation when it is being planned through counseling to minimize its negative effects on them.

ItemContributions of National Agricultural Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute (NaSARRI) in addressing IN ADDRESSING HOUSEHOLD FOOD INSECURITY IN AMWOMA SUB-COUNTY, DOKOLO DISTRICT( 2018) ALOTI, BECKY ANGELLAThis report consists of five chapters i.e. Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Presentation of findings and Conclusion and recommendations. The first two chapters were largely informed by document review on the related studies which helped in identifying gaps in the works of previous scholars that this study tried to fill. The third chapter (methodology) shows how the study findings were achieved from the respondents, in chapter four, the study findings are presented, discussed and interpreted and then chapter five, conclusions and recommendations are made. In the course of this study especially during data gathering, I was able to observe certain key aspects such as farming is a major source of livelihood for many rural households. Many of these households are at the risk of being food insecure as they practice rain fed agriculture which is not so reliable and they also indulge less in alternative income activities which would have otherwise supplemented agriculture for household food needs, etc. I also noticed that the households using NaSARRI‘s improved crop varieties were better off than the other households in terms of; household nutrition, diet diversity and are at less risk of being food insecure. Majority of them attributed their use of the improved crop varieties to being knowledgeable about their performance and group dynamics which makes it easier for them to access the technologies through pooling resources. Very few challenges were encountered during the study and most of which were resolved effectively. However I argue NaSARRI to upscale her activities such that it is not only people in the target community but the entire country.
