ItemCoping strategies of widows : a study of Ddwaniro Sub-County, Kiboga District(Makerere University, 2008) Nassuna, MaryThe study was set to identify the coping strategies of widows in Ddwaniro Sub County, Kiboga District, Uganda. The specific objectives of this study were to identify factors that bring about widowhood; institutional structures established for widow related support; the activities that widow engage in to earn a living; and to make recommendations for possible solutions to improve on widows' coping strategies. The study adopted a descriptive cross- sectional design in order to enable the researcher describe in detail what the study population considered to be the coping strategies of widows. Purposive sampling in particular was used to select the sample of the respondents; snowball was also used in triangulation with purposive sampling. The study identified the coping strategies of widows to include: engaging 10 economic activities and joining voluntary organizations that provide counseling and support to their children. Such activities enable them provide basic necessities to their families hence coping with some of their challenges. Alternative courses of action in improving widows' wellbeing were suggested and these include forming widows' association, promoting Functional Adult Literacy (FAL), providing them with agricultural inputs and offering them credit facilities with affordable interest rates. The above alternatives imply sensitizing, capacity building and empowering widows.

ItemAnalysis of the factors that have contributed to persistent rural small holder production in agriculture and its implications to household poverty reduction(Makerere University, 2008-04) Nalubwama, Annet LillianThe study sought to analyse the factors that have contributed to the persistence of small holder production. In agriculture and its implication to rural household poverty, a case of Buloba village in Wakiso District. The study was carried out in Buloba village in Wakiso district were small production in agriculture has been persistent. Participants in the study were local people in the village from 30 household and 5 key informants who are the local leaders in Buloba village. It was both a qualitative study. The purpose of study was to analyse the factors that have contributed to the persistence of rural small holder production in agriculture and how it has impacted on household poverty reduction. The study found out small holder production has been on an increase to an extent where food security is not guaranteed in case of severe dry seasons from the findings, it was seen that subsistence production was the common type of production and because of this, households could not acquire necessities in life. The study found out that lack of agriculture extension services was a strong factor contributing to small holder production besides other factor contributing to small holder production besides other factors such as poor land tenure system, inadequate infrastructure, poor technology HIV/AIDS, laziness and many others. The study recommended better farming techniques to be taught to the people and provision improved seeds was paramount in increasing production and surplus for sale and through this household poverty reduction could be achieved.

ItemSubstance use, mental health and quality of life among beneficiaries of Uganda Youth Development Link(Makerere University, 2014) Nalwoga, Angel ; Nalumansi, Sarah ; Nampebwa, Jovia ; Namaganda, Pearl Clare ; Namirembe, Sylivia ; Namatovu, Mercy Kirabo ; Mirembe, PreciousThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between substance use, mental health and quality of life among youths of Uganda Youth Development Link. The objectives of the study were to determine the level of substance use, mental health and general quality of life among youths of UYDEL, to examine the relationship between substance use and quality of life, to establish the relationship between mental health and quality of life and to find out the relationship between substance use and mental health. The study was adopted using a correlational survey design and it involved a sample of 100 beneficiaries from UYDEL, both male and female. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and later analyzed the data using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social scientists). The findings show that there is a weak relationship between substance use and quality of life (r=-352, p=.002), the study also found out that there was a weak relationship between mental health and quality of life ( r=-264, p=.01 ). Further more, the study discovered a strong relationship between substance use and mental health (r=.445 , p=.001 ). These findings provide a foundation for interventions to be created in order to facilitate better mental health and good quality of life among youths plus helping them overcome the use of substances.

ItemPersonal and home factors influencing knowledge about climatic change among secondary school students( 2016-09) Baguma, EvaristThe research investigated the relationship between personal factors,home factors and knowledge about climatic change among secondary school students.The study intended to achieve the following objectives,to find out whether home factors such as parental support and knowledge about climate change are significantly related.To examine the relationship between personal factors such as age,sex,class,and knowledge about climate change among secondary school students. The study used cross section design,the sample size of 143 respondents was used for the study comprising secondary school students from the senior one to six administered questionnaires were used to collect data and SPSS was used to analyse it. Tables and percentages were used to find out the background characteristics and knowledge about climatic change .The findings show that there is a significant relation ship between home factors and knowledge about climatic change among secondary shoo, students.The findings also show there is a significant relationship between personal,home factors and knowledge about climatic change among secondary school students. The study recommended that student should always be careful when they are learning about climatic change so that they can be equipped with more knowledge about climatic change causes and effects of climatic change.This is reflected in the findings of the study which showed that the increase in the level of education leads to increase in knowledge about climatic change.

ItemParenting styles, substance abuse and self esteem among adolescents(Makerere University, 2016-09) Muyanja, JosephThe study sought to establish the relationship between parenting styles. Substance abuse and self-esteem among adolescents. The study was carried out in a secondary school in Nakasomgola district. 100 respondents were included in the study using the simple random sampling method particularly purposive sampling. A self-administered questionnaire was used to interview respondents, it was divided into sections A bio-data, B parenting styles using the measurement of parent style Questionnaire. B substance abuse, C self-esteem using the Rosen burg self-esteem questionnaire. Data was analysed in SPSS using the person correlation co-effiency and the study results showed that there is a relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem, there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and substance abuse and that there no significant relationship between self-esteem and substance abuse. The results have been discussed and recommendations made that a deeper study be done looking specifically at the different parenting styles in relationship with the other study variables among adolescents.

ItemSelf-attribution beliefs, self efficacy and academic motivation among students in secondary schools(Makerere University, 2017) Ataho, Lauben ; Kakajara, Eugenia ; Katushabe, IvanThe study sought to examine the relationship between self-attribution beliefs, self-efficacy and academic motivation among students in secondary schools. the objectives were to assess the relationship between self-attribution beliefs and academic motivation among students in secondary schools, to examine, the relationship between self-efficacy and academic motivation among students in secondary schools and to assess the relationship between self attribution beliefs and self efficacy among students in secondary schools. research process consisted of review of secondary information such as literature review, designing of research tools, collection of primary data and processing and analysis of primary data. The study employed a correlation coefficient (r) to reach its conclusion and testing the hypothesis. Data was analyzed by use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). the findings found out that the level of academic motivation is relatively high among secondary school students and more females than males participated in the research study. that the level of self-attribution beliefs was relatively unstable and controllable and self-efficacy was relatively high among the students in secondary schools. therefore, conclusions were drawn that there is a positive relationship between self-attribution beliefs, self-efficacy and academic motivation among students in secondary schools.

Employees’ satisfaction is considered as all-around module of an organization’s human resource strategies. According to Simatwa (2011) job satisfaction means a function which is positively related to the degree to which one’s personal needs are fulfilled in the job situation. Job satisfaction means pleasurable emotional state of feeling that results into performance at the workplace (Simatwa, 2011). Employee job satisfaction is supremely important in an organization because it is what productivity depends on. If your employees are satisfied they would produce superior quality performance in optimal time and lead to growing profits.

ItemImagery and meaning in selected Tooro proverbs(Makerere University, 2017) Irumba, CatherineThis study examines the use of imagery in selected Tooro proverbs, focusing on how symbolic and visual language contributes to the construction of meaning within the cultural context of the Batooro people of Western Uganda. Tooro proverbs are widely recognized not just for their poetic form, but for their role in guiding thought, transmitting moral values, and shaping cultural identity. The research specifically explores how imagery operates within these expressions, what types of imagery are most commonly used, and what cultural, social, and moral meanings are communicated through such language. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies ethnolinguistic and thematic analysis to a selected sample of Rutooro proverbs. The proverbs were sourced from oral interviews, field observations, and secondary materials such as published proverb collections and community archives. Data were interpreted based on recurring symbolic patterns and their functional roles within Batooro cultural life. Findings indicate that imagery in these proverbs draws heavily from familiar domains such as animals, food, ecological systems, tools, and the human body. These symbols are not decorative; they are tied to lived experiences and serve to communicate ideas about patience, humility, diligence, social identity, and ethical responsibility. The analysis shows that imagery in Tooro proverbs is often employed in everyday contexts to shape conduct, reinforce tradition, and transmit knowledge across generations. Rather than being abstract or ornamental, the imagery reflects the Batooro worldview, making each proverb contextually grounded and socially relevant. The study concludes that imagery is central to how meaning is structured in Tooro proverbs. It functions as a tool for informal instruction and plays a role in maintaining the cohesion and continuity of Batooro cultural knowledge in contemporary society.

ItemPerceived organizational support, organizational commitment and turnover intentions among the employees of Civil Aviation Authority Uganda(Makerere University, 2017-06) Rugyira, AlbertThe purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between motivation, employee engagement and job performance among employees of Nansana Municipal Council. The study adopted a correlational survey design that is quantitative in nature with a population of 50 staff. A census sampling technique was adopted by the researcher because the total number of employees in this organization was relatively small thus, in order to avoid sampling bias, this technique was used to draw a sample of 50 respondents. Data was collected using a 10 item motivation scale adopted from Brisling et al., (2006) and Mahaney et al., (2006) measuring motivation, employee engagement was assessed by a standard instrument developed by developed by Schaufelli and Salanova (2002), and lastly, job performance was measured using an 14-item scale instrument developed by Campbell (2001). Data was entered into Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) computer program version 23.0 and hypotheses tested using Pearson product-moment correlation Coefficient (r). Results indicated that; there is a significant and positive relationship between motivation and employee engagement. Similarly, findings revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between motivation and job performance. Finally, findings showed that there is a positive significant relationship between employee engagement and job performance. Thus, basing on the findings of this study: it is important for organizations to put in place management systems and policies that foster an environment where employees feel motivated because a motivated work force will eventually lead to employees` engagement levels to increase and then go an extra mile to exhibit extra-role behaviors thus increasing performance.

ItemSubstance abuse knowledge, attitude, practices among teachers in Kampala Secondary Schools(Makerere University, 2017-08) Kaitesi, CarolineSubstance Abuse is a world challenge affecting both the fast-growing countries and developing countries. Uganda being a developing country faces challenges of continued substance abuse and improper use of pharmaceutical drugs by person of all ages. This thesis explored some of the most commonly abused drugs and substances circulating among the teen-age bracket around secondary schools in Uganda. The findings, though not alarming are rather demoralising for the growing population as the war against substance abuse continues to suffer from insufficient ammunition. This study therefore sought to bring forth the different but commonly abused substances, the popular notion surrounding substance abuse among teen age beings, the role of their society amidst the mire and the various stakeholders in their role to significantly affect substance abuse. An interview guide for teachers of a few secondary schools around Kampala was made and used to gather information regarding this thesis. The responses showed the manner in which both the substance abusers (students) and the teachers struggle to beat the surrounding factors that hinder the fight against substance abuse. Finally, the thesis considers the modus in which initiatives against substance abuse can be integrated in society today. It also looks at the roles of the different individuals and stakeholders handling the current situation as the nation looks forward to rid itself of substance abuse

ItemDance as a Tool for Social Behavioral Change among Children(Makerere University, 2017-09-06) Namutaaya, Ddembe KevinaABSTRACT This study examines dance as a tool for social behavioral change among children and the youth. Using a case study of Rainbow House of Hope Uganda – a non- governmental organisation that takes care of vulnerable children, the investigation does not only position dance as a means, and a method of rehabilitation, but also opens discussions on the very core essence of dancing, which if put in analytical lenses is in the very center of many day today life activities of children. The main objective of this study was to study how Dance can be used as a tool for social behavioral change and the supporting objectives were; (i) To assess how dance is used as a tool for social behavioral change among the children at Rainbow House of Hope Uganda (RHU). (ii) To assess the benefits of using dance as a tool for social behavioral change among the children of RHU and (iii) To establish the constraints of using dance as a tool for social behavioral change of the newly recruited children at RHU. Many cosmopolitan dance practitioners and scholars in Uganda today have not only given basis for the importance of the same but have also asserted its contribution to the change of attitudes among children (See Boorman 1973; Raily 1984) Paulo Freire (1973), Sherrill Barryman Miller (1988) and Julie McDonald (1991) further explained the educative essence of dance in relation to behavioral change in youths and children. Maldonado (2012) however, gave an insight into the way dace changes lives by giving an epic explanation of how dance changed and transformed lives of children in El Salvador and through his article the researcher had a clear insight of the usefulness of dance in relation to behaviors of teenagers. In the study, the researcher analyses in depth the use and process of using dance as a tool of social behavioral change in youths and she goes further to specifically look at the case study which is Rainbow House of Hope Uganda in chapter three. She discusses the study findings like the strong attachment dance has towards behavioral change of youths and children and also she goes on to make conclusions and recommendations to the Rainbow House of Hope like having a stronger hand in educating the children and she also points out areas for further research for example how dance enhances certain behavioral patterns and using other case studies of other dance schools and companies.

ItemSubstance abuse knowledge, attitude, practice among teachers in Kampala secondary schools(Makerere University, 2017-10) Alum, GloriaThe purpose of the study was to examine Substance Abuse Knowledge, Attitude and Practices among Teachers in Kampala Secondary Schools. The objective of the study was to: Identify types and forms of substances abused, establish teacher’s knowledge and attitude on substance abuse and establish practical steps taken to remedy the vice in the selected secondary schools. The study used a cross sectional research design with a qualitative research approach. A sample size of 20 teachers, 3 head teachers and 3 parents was selected in Rubaga Division. Data was collected using Focus Group Discussions and direct interviews. Validity of the questionnaire was achieved through consultation with the supervisor that all the instruments had adequate traits. The analysis was as proposed in the research objectives. Patterns and connections within and between categories were identified and reported. It was interpreted by composing explanations and substantiating them using the respondent’s open responses. This study found out substances abused in Kampala Schools are alcohol, marijuana, kuber, Tobacco, shisha, Cocaine and Pain killers (specifically Panadol) with alcohol and marijuana being the most abused. The study found out that teachers are knowledgeable about ways of identifying students abusing substances but have little knowledge on how students bring these substances into schools. The study also found out the attitude towards substance abusers among teachers is mainly negative with head teachers being more sympathetic. The findings also found out that the main practices among teachers to deal with substance abuse is counselling them. Other practices include involvement of parents, encouraging anti-drug clubs, increasing vigilance at school, improving teacher student relationships and using religious leaders to talk to students about Substance abuse The recommendations were increasing strictness in schools through school rules and vigilant security at entry points; organization of sensitization seminars; students seeking counselling when hooked, reporting friends involved in abusing substances and not giving into peer pressure to abuse substances; government intervention in implementing rules and regulations against importing of substances into the country; and laws that punish individuals that sell substances to students.

ItemWork place design, job performance and turnover intentions among employees at Reach a Hand Uganda(RAHU)(Makerere University, 2017-10) Tamale, Aaron JosephAbstract Managers have always been faced with a problem of retaining highly productive and satisfied employees however most organizations around the world are facing a high Turnover Intentions ratio. The purpose of the study was to find out the relationship between work place Design, job performance and Turnover Intentions among employees of Reach a Hand Uganda (RAHU). A correlational survey design was adopted using a sample of 40 respondents who were selected using convenience sampling techniques to target respondents who participated in the study. The researcher used a self-administered questionnaire to collect data for the study. The researcher sought for permission from the organization by getting an introductory letter from the School of Psychology to introduce the researcher to the Human Resource of Reach A Hand Uganda. The data was analyzed using a Statistical Package for Social Scientists (21.0 program). Findings in the table showed that there is a significant negative relationship between workplace design and turnover intentions (r= -0.410**; P<0.01), showed a non-significant relationship between job performance and turnover intentions (r=0.129, p=.428>0.01) and a positive significant relationship between workplace design and job performance since (r= .364*, P=.201<0.05). Since findings showed that there is a significant relationship between workplace design and performance, managers need to identify factors which are incorporated in the workplace design which involve lighting, spatial arrangement, office design, job characteristics which help in determining performance.

Poor salary packages, long working hours, mistreatment of supervisors with employees, are the major causes of creating demotivating factors which lead to loss of work ethics among employees. Low work ethics produces large number of undesirable effects for both individual and organization. The incidents of loss of confidence and competence in administration of the various work activities are the severe problems related to low work ethics . Employees performance is adversely fraught by work ethics , were a bid to increase the level of work ethics among employee is in almost every organization.

ItemOrganizational culure and employee performance at Makerere University: a case of College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS)( 2017-11) Kakwezi, MaryThe purpose of the study was to examine the effect of organizational culture on the performance of employees working at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), Makerere University. The study was guided by the following objectives; Examine the level of employee performance at CHUSS, Makerere University and to Examine how organizational culture influences employee performance at CHUSS, Makerere University. The study adopted a quantitative cross-sectional research design. And from the accessible population of 80 staff, a sample size of 65 staff were selected for the study. The study findings show that performance orientation at CHUSS is not determined by rewarding employees in promotion to their contribution, is determined by performance characterized by frequent appraisal of employees, is surely determined by promotion based on individual competence and is not determined by individual well-doing in the organization in order to be shrewd and competitive with a strong driver for power. It is recommended that Organizations can achieve performance by attracting employees who already poses this knowledge, or by providing employees with formal and/or informal training. Employee motivation, job performance and organization performance are needed to achieving higher levels of performance since individuals can be motivated through incentives and job performance management approaches. The production of periodic reports on work done indicates employee performance. Reports measures employee’s commitment at work especially in absence of coercive measures.

ItemHousehold challenges in accessing clean water in peri urban areas(Makerere University, 2017-11) Mirembe, SharonThis study sought to assess the household challenges faced in accessing clean water in peri urban areas focusing on Bwaise Parish in Kawempe Division. The specific objectives entailed; finding out the level of household accessibility to clean water, finding out the challenges faced by peri-urban households in accessing clean water and identifying possible mechanisms for improving household’s accessibility to clean water in Bwaise parish III A qualitative research approach was used to carry out this study. Data was collected from household heads and Local council leaders (Key informants). Simple random sampling method was used to select 97 respondents who participated in this study. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview guides. Data was then captured and analyzed using SPSS 20. Package. Household access to clean water in Bwaise Parish was low, 80.41% of the households accessed water from unprotected spring wells, and 61.86% accessed piped water for drinking. 72.2% of the household members walked more than 500m to access water from the spring wells while 84.5% spent more than 1 hour waiting to get water during dry seasons. 66% of the households paid for water with majority paying 200 shillings during wet season and a 20 litre jerrycan fetching up to 500 shillings during dry season or break down of the limited water sources. By challenges faced in accessing clean water, 95.88% of the participants reported poorly planned settlement limiting establishment of water systems by NWSC, 92.78% were affected by inflated water bills especially at piped water, 77.32% cited poor management of the water sources, 69.07% reported a lot of time was spent on water access, 58.76% reported contamination of water with faecal matter during rainy season and spillage of sewage systems, causing several water borne diseases such as; Typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery. The possible mechanism for improve household access to clean water were majorly lobbying of government to provide water facilities and extend affordable water services (89.69%), community mobilization of finances for maintenance and establishment of clean water sources(70.10%), engaging private-public sector partnership in water provision (59.79%) and finally setting up water reservoirs in the settlement (50.52%). The study clear indicates that access to clean water among households in Bwaise was still low for majority of the households and there was limited clean water sources such as piped water. Government and its partners; Private sector and NGOs should partner to provide more access to clean water sources and equally exploit the available water sources which are within Bwaise parish III.
