ItemDidactic value of folktales: a case study of selected folktales of the Acholi of Uganda(Makerere University, 2022-01-04) Lanyero, MonicaThe study examines Acholi trickster tales and its didactic values i.e. (how it helps in child upbringing, teaching survival skills and passage of culture from one generation to the next). The selected Acholi folktales in this study have been translated from Luo to English language. The majorly used method for data collection was interviewing and the use of key informants.

ItemAn exploration of the place and value of Litrary devices in the use of proverbs: a case study of selected Acholi proverbs(Makerere University, 2022-01-05) Aromorach, RachealThis study is envisioned to investigate and find out the place and value of literary devices as used in proverbs. The study is focusing on proverbs of the Acholi people. Proverbs form an essential source of oral narrative that can be written down or put in media. Embedding oral forms of literature such as proverbs in the formal curriculum in this century is very crucial in adding authentic city to our education in Uganda. This will make what people learn at school and at home in form of literary works more related and closer to their own lives’ experiences unlike the foreign western literature. Therefore, the research aims at particularly at opening up our mind on how and why oral narratives such as proverbs are important and has to be considered an essential element of teaching and learn.

These riddles are used to symbolize commitment and perseverance as a sign of family life in Acholi. All the discussed aspects are in line with contemporary society.

ItemIrony in Acholi Folktales(Makerere University, 2025-12-04) Aling, Medrine LynnetteThis study explores the use of irony in Acholi folktales, a rich and vibrant aspect of the oral literature of the Acholi people of Northern Uganda. By analyzing a selection of traditional stories, the research aims to uncover the various forms and functions of irony within these narratives. Irony in Acholi folktales often serves as a tool for social commentary, highlighting the contradictions and complexities of human behavior and societal norms. The study employs a literary analysis approach, examining how irony is constructed through language, plot, and character development. It also considers the cultural and historical contexts that shape the ironic elements of these tales. Findings suggest that irony not only entertains but also educates, reinforcing moral lessons and communal values while simultaneously critiquing social issues. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Acholi folklore and its role in preserving and transmitting cultural knowledge.

ItemSignificance of symbolism in selected Acholi proverbs department of Literature.(Makerere University, 2025-01) Lamaro, Labanya EstherThis study intensively explores the significance of symbolism in selected proverbs in Acholi. The study specially looks at the significance of symbolism in selected proverbs in Acholi. It looks at how symbolism is used in Acholi proverbs in relation to development of other aspects such as imagery, the moral lessons, themes, and characterization. As such, the topic brings out importance of symbolism in the selected proverbs in Acholi. According to the researches made, proverbs occupy a central place in the Acholi culture and they are highly descriptive. The proverbs are usually told to the young people of the family by the elders during night gatherings under the tree, or at the fireplace locally known as Wang oo in Acholi language. This is done to educate and advise them in their daily life. Proverbs are basically expressions or sayings based on common sense or some expressions. They are usually nothing but common and traditional sayings which explain some truth. They are metaphorical in nature. Therefore, the origin lies in local or universal truths and principles. As such, my study seeks for the effectiveness of symbolism in selected Acholi proverbs. This comes along with the lessons, themes, and characterization.

ItemThe study of symbolic representation of Acholi proverbs among the Acholi people in Northern Uganda(Makerere University, 2023-08) Adong, AgnesAlthough Acholi proverbs of the Luo-speaking people of Uganda are creatively crafted speeches with beautiful and rich values that make lengthy statements short; and spoken in a cultured way for communication of traditional values, the influx of foreign languages in Uganda has contributed to the rapid decline in the standards of this cherished Luo indigenous linguistics. These proverbs embody deep symbolic and socio-cultural values of the Acholi people of the Acholi culture. This paper showcases 50 visual symbols created from the selected proverbs by the researchers of selected Acholi proverbs with the aim of making them regain their past glory and to promote visual literacy. In highlighting the significance of these selected proverbs, the study employed art-based technique of a qualitative research approach to represent them graphically. based upon the findings of the socio-cultural values embedded in these proverbs, this paper recommends that more symbols should be created using the numerous proverbs and wise sayings that are in existence in our local languages to salvage the declining image of those proverbs as an important component of African art for communication.

ItemThe use of imagery in selected Acholi folktales.(Makerere University, 2022-11-16) Ajok, ZipporahThis dissertation explains the existence of the Imagery in Acholi Folktales and also how it is used and the eventual effectiveness it has in giving out a message in the folktales. Oral literature is one of the types of Literature that has been a topic of research in different spheres of education with much interest placed on how the literary techniques have been used in Oral literature and these literary techniques include irony, personification, symbolism, similes to mention but a few. But much is yet to be added and studied on the existence of imagery in traditional folktales and its function in folktales. This research is intended to shine more light on Imagery as one of the techniques used in folktales and show its importance and how it is used to relay the intended message in the folktale. Therefore this research bridges the gap that has been created by this mishap. This research gives a definition to Imagery and also explains the different branches of imagery giving examples of each branch of imagery. This dissertation also extends it width and length and talks about what other scholars of literature have discussed in regards to Imagery being a potential and valuable techniques used in Literature. The dissertation afterwards uses a number of Acholi folktales to show that imagery is indeed present in folktales and it also explains the significance of the images in the folktales and how the images relay the message of the writer. By the end of this dissertation the gap that is existent in the study of imagery and folktales would have been bridged.
