ItemAesthetic value of Luganda proverbs of caution.(Makerere University., 2024-01-24) Kebirungi, JeanIn the past years, many things have changed in our cultural norms where people take traditional wisdom in form of proverbs as just a normal and unjustified way of speaking rather than acknowledging the usefulness of proverbial speech and the message that lies underneath. The different proverbs that are spoken among the Baganda educate on parenting, respect, honor, values among others. Many years ago, Baganda people understood and knew the purpose of proverbs as a form of education. But the onset of formal education has resulted into a systematic dilution of the language and loss of knowledge about these proverbs because the generation of formal education values less the indigenous language and proverbial meanings of the language expressed by the older generation. This is why it’s important to all people of this generation to learn more on the proverbs

ItemAllegorical representations of corruption in kumam fables(Makerere University, 2025) Oceng, IsmaelThis research explores the allegorical representations of corruption in selected Kumam fables. It investigates how corruption is symbolically portrayed through characters, settings, and events within the narratives. The study examines the moral and societal messages embedded in these fables, focusing on how the tales reflect and critique real-life issues such as bribery, misuse of power, and dishonesty. The study was inspired by the limited scholarly attention given to Kumam oral literature, especially regarding its potential to comment on contemporary social issues. In an era where moral decay and corruption continue to plague communities, these fables offer timeless wisdom and lessons that remain relevant today. By analyzing these stories, this research seeks to promote the preservation and appreciation of Kumam cultural heritage. Using a qualitative approach, the study collects and analyzes a selection of 6 Kumam fables. Data collection methods included oral interviews, participant observations, and textual analysis. Each fable is analyzed in terms of its plot, themes, characters, and the symbolic devices used to portray corruption. The study ultimately demonstrates how traditional storytelling serves not only to entertain but also to educate and critique societal ills.

ItemAmbiguity in the use of proverbs: a case study of selected Luganda proverbs.(Makerere University, 2023-01-18) Namugenyi, Rose MaryThis dissertation aims at establishing different ambiguous aspects in Luganda proverbs and assessing the role of ambiguity of the proverb to the interpretation and contextual use of the proverbs. It shall be noted that proverbs are not created by the folk but rather by an individual. Someone at some time and somewhere couches a general observation, behaviour, or experience into a short complete sentence that subsequently is picked up by others who might well change the wording slightly resulting in a number of variants until a standard formulation result. It shall be noted that proverbs are a part of a wider oral literature of a society which include oral narratives like: myths, legends, folktales and fables; short formulaic forms like: proverbs, riddles, tongue twisters, and similes; poetic forms like: epics, lullabies, children’s rhymes, recitations, popular poetry, festive songs, popular songs and several other forms. Language can lead to many ambiguous utterances. A mere word or a phrase may, in its relationship to other words or phrases, force a reader or listener to attempt to construe its meaning in more than one way. The study also notes the key roles of ambiguity in the language as per selected Luganda proverbs as cultural differentiation.
