Peer pressure, self-esteem and substance abuse among Makerere University students

Abstract

Many young people studying in Universities, particularly Makerere university are still thought to be struggling with substance abuse in their respective communities and societies which is reflected in the amount of substances they consume whi believed to be brought about by the alternating levels of selfle at university. This is esteem that are being attributed to the lack of enough social support, hence being influenced by their own peers. This research sought to examine the relationship betw een peer pressure, selfesteem and substance abuse among people Makerere university students. A correlational study design that is quantitative and descriptive was adopted to establish the relationship between the variables. A total of 100 respondents, bot h male and female respondents participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), where Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. The study revealed tha t there was no significant relationship between peer pressure and substance abuse among Makerere university students; the study also revealed that there was no significant relationship between peer pressure and selfesteem among Makerere university student that there was no significant relationship between selfs. The study further showed esteem and substance abuse among people Makerere university students.
