Occupational stress, employee engagement and job performance among immigration officers at Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship among occupational stress, employee engagement and job performance at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The study intended to achieve the following objectives; To find out the relationship between occupational stress and employee engagement, to examine the relationship between employee engagement and job performance, to find out the relationship between occupational stress and job performance. Table 7 shows that a significant positive relationship exists between occupational stress and employee engagement with correlation co-efficient (r) 0.85 and level of significance [.454] is greater than 0.01, the hypothesis was retained. The table 8 shows that a positive relationship exists between employee engagement and job performance with correlation co-efficient (r) 0.620** and level of significance [.00] which is less than 0.01, the null hypothesis is rejected. The correlation table 9 highlighted a significant positive relationship exists between occupational stress and job performance with correlation coefficient (r) 0.275 and level of significance [.053] is greater than 0. 01.. The null hypothesis was retained. Findings implied that an increase in the occupational stress granted to the employees doesn't necessarily lead to employee engagement, results also implied that high rates of employee engagement lead to an increase in job performance. Finding also implied that increase in occupational stress shall lead to a great decrease in employee job performance. In conclusion this study infers that employer should be mindful of the negative impact that stress has over employee engagement and that this affects the overall job performance. It was recommended that employers should put in place employee assistance programs to help motivate stressed employees their opinions and causes of stress to be rectified thus improve productivity.
