Alcohol abuse, poverty and family breakups in Kawempe Division Kampala.
Abstract
The current study explored the relationship between Alcohol Abuse, Poverty and Family
Breakups in Kawempe Division in Kampala. The study was guided by three main objectives; to
examine the relationship between alcohol abuse and family breakups in Kawempe division, to
examine the relationships between alcohol abuse and poverty in Kawempe division and to find out
whether poverty and family breakups are significantly related. A case study design and Survey
questionnaire technique were used to collect the data from local communities of Bwaise parish
which are found in Kawempe division. A pearson rank Correlation in Special Package for Social
Scientists (SPSS) analyses were applied to analyze the quantitative data to find the relationships’
strength. The study found out that that there is no significant relationship between Alcohol Abuse
and Family Breakups., further it was found out that that there is no significant relationship between
Alcohol Abuse and Poverty and finally and finally results however indicated that there is a positive
significant relationship between Poverty and Family Breakups. This could be attributed to the fact
that when families break up, the level of poverty also increases and this majorly occurs with single
mothers. From the results, the study recommended that there is a need to sensitize the community
of Kawempe division, on the causes and effects of alcohol abuse and associated problems so as to
reduce on its level of consumption and dependency by the local community, need for Ministry of
Local Government, Ministry of Health and other policy makers to enhance the already existing
policies related to alcohol control in different societies, and a need for an intervention of religious
leaders, elders and other categories of people in an effort to maintain family stability in Kawempe
division.
