Personality, assertiveness and critical thinking among Makerere university students
Abstract
This report is about the research that was carried out in Makerere University, which is
located in Kampala-Uganda. A total number of students were 1753 from college of Humanities
and social sciences. The variables considered in the study were personality which include
agreeableness, extraversion, conscientiousness and openness to experience, Assertiveness is a
skill regularly referred to in social and communication skills training and the last variable was
critical thinking which is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to
believe.
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether there was a relationship between
personality, assertiveness and critical thinking among Makerere University students.
Questionnaires were used as tools of data collection from the students who were the
respondents. The findings after data analysis was that there was no relationship between
personality and assertiveness, The second finding was a negative significant relationship
between assertiveness and critical thinking, The last finding was that two personality trait
(openness and conscientiousness) were significantly related to critical thinking and the other
two personality traits (agreeableness and extraversion) were not significantly related to critical
thinking
