The impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on the psychosocial wellbeing and academic performance of Makerere University Students
Abstract
COVID 19 outbreak lead to a lock down which had an impact on the psychosocial well being and academic performance of university students. In order to stop the spread of COVID 19,
the president declared certain prevention measures like social distance, washing of hands,
sanitizing and lock down being one of them, which led to the closure of all universities and other
academic institutes in the country. As a result of that, it formed the purpose of the study that
intended to examine the impact of COVID 19 lockdown on the psychosocial wellbeing and
academic performance of students in Makerere University. A correlation design was used in the
study which involved 132 students.
According to the research carried out, it showed that the lock down had less impact on the
psychosocial wellbeing of university students but had a great impact on their academic
performance. Furthermore, research shows that the psychosocial well-being had an impact on the
academic performance therefore it was concluded that a good psychosocial well-being leads to
good performance while poor psychosocial well-being leads to poor or bad performance.
