COVID-19 pandemic-related work engagement, general mental health and motivation of teachers in the selected schools of Kampala District

Abstract

he COVID-19 pandemic has caused untold suffering and disruptions in different spheres of life. One of such spheres is work-life, whereby jobs have been threatened. The closure of workplaces resulted in short-term and long-term job losses, hence causing worry about ability to retain jobs for many people across the world. The worry about one’s job can cause serious mental health problems and affect motivation. However, supportive organizations can alleviate suffering and steer motivation of employees. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between Covid-19 pandemic, work engagement, employee mental health, among teachers in schools. Sample size of 40 teachers were selected according to Krejice and Morgan table (1970) using simple random sample technique in order to include various category of respondents. Teachers were selected regardless of the classes they teach and self-administered questionnaires were used which involved closed ended questions measured in Likert scale. The study also adopted standardized instruments that have also been used by several publishers in scientific research. Data was also entered and managed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 25 where descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Descriptive statistics was to analyse participants’ background information and inferential was to test the hypothesis.The findings indicated that the majority of respondents were female with 55.1% and the least were male with 44.9%.
