Happiness and organisational citizenship behavior among secondary school teachers.

Abstract

The study sought to investigate the relationship between happiness and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) among secondary school teachers in Uganda. The study intended to achieve the following objectives; to determine the levels of Happiness among secondary school teachers, to determine the levels of organizational citizenship behavior among secondary school teachers and to establish the relationship between happiness and organizational citizenship behavior. A correlation study design was used in the study to establish the relationship between two variables. The study used a total sample of 143 respondents who were subjected to simple random sampling technique. Data was then collected using self-administered questionnaires. The researcher analyzed data using statistical package for social scientist version 23 (SPSS). Percentages and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to test the hypothesis. The levels of happiness were found to be significantly high. Results revealed relatively high levels of organizational citizenship behavior. Findings also revealed that there is a positive non-significant relationship between happiness and organizational citizenship behavior (r=.188, p>0.05). Although high levels of both variables were observed, happy employees may not necessarily engage in organizational citizenship behaviors. Several policies should be drafted by the ministry of Education to support teachers well-being by ensuring that manageable workloads are prioritized and adequate resources are provided, enabling teachers to focus on effective teaching and improving their working experience.
