Transactional leadership, leader trust and organisational citizenship behaviour at Kyambogo University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between transactional leadership, leader trust, and organizational citizenship behaviour among employees of Kyambogo University. The study adopted a cross sectional study design which was correlation in nature with a population of 100 employees. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 80 respondents from the population. Data was collected from respondents using self-administered standard questionnaire and entered into the computer for analysis through Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 23. Descriptive statistics showed that 75% of the respondents were male and 25% were female, majority were between 31- 40 years. Results from Pearson product-moment correlation (r) further indicated that there was a significant negative relationship between transactional leadership and leader trust. (r=-.475**, p=.006), as transactional leadership and organisational citizenship behaviour (r=-.399**, p=.000) However, there was a significant positive relationship between leader trust and organisational citizenship behaviour, (r=.633**, p=.000). Therefor the present study provides a basis for further investigation on the relationship between transactional leadership, leader trust and organisational citizenship behaviour of employees of employees in different institutions.
