Loneliness and Turnover Intentions among Secondary School Teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Loneliness and Turnover intensions among secondary school teachers. The study intended to achieve the following objectives; to find out the levels of loneliness among secondary school teachers, to find out the levels of turnover intentions among secondary school teachers, to find out whether loneliness and Turnover intentions are significantly related. A correlational study design was used in the study to establish the relationship between Loneliness and Turnover intentions among secondary school teachers. The study used a sample of 180 respondents who were adopted using simple sampling technique. Data was then collected using self-administered questionnaire and later analyzed by the researcher using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPPS) and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed that there was a non-significant relationship between loneliness and turnover intentions (r=.100, p> 0.05). This meant that the lonely teachers don’t necessarily have thoughts to leave their current jobs. In Wakiso district, many schools are facing low levels of loneliness and moderate turnover intentions, and this is attributed to high level of engagement by teachers and good working conditions. Therefore, it was recommended that supervisors and head teachers should take note of the factors that could cause an increase in turnover intention since the findings indicate that loneliness is not significantly related to turnover intentions. Many policies should be drafted by secondary school administrators to support the teacher’s well- being and find out causes of turnover intensions among them rather than focusing only on excellence on academics.
