Social support, depression and self- esteem among school going adolescents
Abstract
High levels of depression have been attributed to low self-esteem among adolescents .This research set out to examine the relationship between Social support, Self-esteem and Depression among adolescents in secondary school in Kampala district. A correlational study design that quantitative and descriptive was adopted to establish the relationship between the variables. Total of 150 respondents, both male and female participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences [SPSS],where Pearson correlation co efficient [r] was used to test the significance of hypotheses .The study revealed that there was a negative significant relationship between social and depression in adolescents, implying that adolescents who get social support are less likely to manifest depressive symptoms ; the study also revealed that there was a relationship between social support and self-esteem among adolescents. The study further showed that there was a relationship between social support and self-esteem among adolescents.
