dc.description.abstractThe study investigated the relationship between physical abuse, depression, self-esteem and teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum in Kampala city. Three specific objectives were considered; to examine the relationship between physical abuse and teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum, to find out the relationship between depression and teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum, and to assess the relationship between self-esteem and teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum. A quantitative approach was adopted in which only a quantitative data collection tool was used. Data was collected from 138 female adolescents using questionnaires. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics in terms of correlations. The results showed that physical abuse had a strong positive correlation with teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum (r=.359**). In the same vein, the study revealed that depression had a positive moderate correlation with teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum (r=.253**). In addition, correlation results show that self-esteem had a strong negative correlation with teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum (r=-321**). It was concluded that physical abuse, depression, self-esteem had a significant relationship with teenage pregnancies among adolescents in Bwaise slum. The study recommended that there should be: launching of operations arresting perpetrators of adolescent physical abuse in Bwaise slum increase in public awareness about the dangers of physical abuse among adolescents in Bwaise slum using different mass media, teaching of parents and other caregivers better parenting styles so that they are able to offer adequate emotional support to their adolescent children and build their self-esteem, offering counselling and psychotherapy services to depressed female adolescents and establishment of adolescent community centres where adolescents can be equipped with different life skills such as confidence-buildingen_US
