Peer group influence, academic performance and school dropout among secondary schools in Kabarole district

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of peer group influence on academic performance and school dropout among secondary schools in Bukuuku sub-county, Kabarole district. The study also sought to achieve duffrent objectives that include; to find out the role of peer group influence on academic performance of students, find out the relationship between peer group influence and academic performance of students, and establish the various ways of reducing the negative peer group influence among secondary learners in Kabarole district. In regard to the sample size of the study, 40 students were selected from the four selected schools in total for the questionnaires, 10 teachers from each of the school were also selected for interviews and 20 parents were selected for the interviews. The study established is a significant relationship between peer group influence and rate of school dropout among secondary schools in Kabarole district. It was also established that peer group influence and academic performance are significantly negatively related. While peer groups can have both positive and negative effects on academic outcomes, it is essential to understand and address the negative influences to prevent school dropout. Educational institutions, parents, and communities must work collaboratively to create an environment that supports positive peer relationships and encourages academic success, ultimately reducing school dropout rates and promoting the educational attainment of all adolescents. Education is widely recognized as a cornerstone of personal development and economic opportunity, so addressing dropout rates is a significant concern for governments. Governments can establish programs aimed at reintegrating dropouts back into the education system. This may involve alternative education options such as, adult education classes, or vocational training.
