Stress, depression and coping among adolescents in secondary schools, Uganda

Abstract

Stress is still the leading challenge among secondary school adolescents growing up in Uganda. The study was developed to gain more information on the relationship between stress, depression and coping among secondary school adolescents. The study was designed to find out the significant relationship between stress and depression, to find out the significant relationship between stress and coping, and to find out the significant relationship between depression and coping. A quantitative study design was adopted using a correlation study design to discover the relationship between the variables. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) where Pearson correlation co efficient (r) was used. The statistical finding of the magnitude (p=.136>0.01) confirmed that there was no significant relationship between stress and depression, whereas the statistical finding of the magnitude (p=.000<0.01) confirmed that there was a significant relationship between stress and coping, and finally, the statistical finding of the magnitude (p=.000<0.01) confirmed that there was a significant relationship between depression and coping. The findings were to be used by School administrators, Health centers, non-government organizations, Parents and Researchers to help solve stress and depression among secondary school adolescents.
