Attitudes, beliefs and prevalence of sexual violence among women in Makerere Kikoni.
Abstract
The study aimed at examining the role of Attitudes, and Beliefs towards the Prevalence of Sexual Violence among Women in Makerere Kikoni. The study adopted a mixed study design, in which the quantitative design was correlation in nature with a population of 35 participants. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 32 respondents from the population. Quantitative data was collected from respondents using self-administered standard questionnaire and entered in the computer for analysis through Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 23. Descriptive statistics showed that there was equal participation of both female and male respondents (50%), majority were between 20-29 years (80.4%). Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r) further indicated that about 67% of the male participants reported that women are supposed to be loyal them and they are free to have many women unlike women. Results also indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between attitudes, beliefs and prevalence of sexual violence, (r=.601**, p=.000). For qualitative data analysis, interview guides were used in data collection, content analysis was used to enable the researcher to synthesize and search for the general pattern by grouping data into meaningful categories. Qualitative findings indicate that participants reported that they had experienced sexual torture. Furthermore, the findings also indicate that many men and women believe that sometimes men are too weak when it comes to controlling the sexual urge, which some few respondents disagree with.
Therefore, the present study provides a basis and implications for further investigation on attitudes and beliefs, relationship between attitudes, attitudes and prevalence of sexual violence among women in Makerere Kikoni. It was recommended that the local authorities need to form policies that aim at curbing the prevalence of sexual violence in Makerere Kikoni.
