Emotional intelligence and organizational commitment among secondary school teachers in Uganda
Abstract
The study sought to find out the relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment among secondary school teachers. The study intended to achieve the following objectives, To find out the levels of emotional intelligence among secondary school teachers, to discover the levels of organizational commitment among secondary school teachers and to establish whether emotional intelligence and Organizational commitment are significantly related. A correlational study design was used in the study to establish the relationship between the two variables. The study used a total sample of 83 respondents who were subjected to simple random sampling technique of sampling. Data was then collected using self- administered questionnaires. The researcher analyzed data using statistical package for social scientist version 23(SPSS) and percentages and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to test the hypothesis. The levels of emotional intelligence were found to be high. Results revealed moderate levels of organizational commitment. Findings also revealed that there is a non-significant relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment (r=020,p>0.05). Although levels of both variables were fairly high, emotionally intelligent employees may not be necessarily committed to their work. The government should ensure emotional intelligence is included in the selection and recruiting standards for secondary school teachers. In this way, we may get teachers of higher emotional intelligence levels, resultantly with higher commitment to their teaching profession.
