Self-esteem, depression and substance use among adolescents In Kisoro District

Abstract

This study explored the relationship between self-esteem, depression and substance use among adolescents in Kisoro district. Literature related to the topic is covered in chapter 2. It targeted both males and females aged between 16-19 years. It was a quantitative correlation study design that explored whether and to what extent a relationship existed between the three variables. A total of 106 respondents were randomly selected to take part in the study. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the Practical Analytical Software/ Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between self-esteem and depression (r=.453, p=.000). Likewise, depression and substance use were significantly related (r=.303, p=.002). However, the relationship between self-esteem and substance use wasn‟t promised (r=.134, p=.174) hence no relationship. These outcomes explain the nature of these connections. While low selfesteem can result into depression and depression into substance use, the role of self-esteem in initiation of substances among adolescents in Kisoro district is less pronounced. In chapter five of this dissertation, the results are discussed, conclusions are drawn and recommendations suggested including areas where further research is needed.
