Domestic violence, parenting styles and substance abuse among youths in Kamwokya Kampala
Abstract
Many youths in Kamwokya are still thought to be abusing substances in the society which is also assumed to be brought about by the domestic violence which has been attributed to the type of parenting styles from their parents or guardians at their respective homesteads. This research sought to examine the relationship between domestic violence, parenting styles and substance abuse among youths. A correlational study design that is quantitative and descriptive was adopted to establish the relationship between the variables. A total of 100 respondents, both male and female participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), where Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. The study revealed that there was no significant relationship between domestic violence and substance abuse among youths; the study also revealed that there was a significant relationship between domestic violence and parenting styles among youths. The study further showed that there was no significant relationship between parenting styles and substance abuse among youths.
