The present study examined parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse among early adolescents. It was hypothesized that parental separation and self-esteem would be associated with higher substance use among early adolescents. The diverse sample included 100 adolescents assessed as part of the Study. Both high parental separation and self-esteem were related to greater substance use. The findings confirm, as well as extend, propositions in attachment theory.en_US
