Stress, social support and depression among adolescents in Kira secondary school, Wakiso District
Abstract
The study was aimed at finding the relationship between stress, social support and depression among adolescents in Kira secondary school Kira division Wakiso district. The study targeted 100 adolescents 47 males and 53 females aged 12 to 20 years from the entire student’s population. The researcher used simple random sampling during the period of data collection. The objectives of the study were to examine the relationship between stress and depression among adolescents, to establish the relationship between stress and social support among adolescents and to examine the relationship between social support and depression among adolescents. ThePerceivedStress Scale -10 was used for stress, The Multidimentional Scale of Perceived Social Support, was used for social support and Beck Depression 8Inventory.used for depression. The hypotheses were tested using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The study results showed that there is a significant relationship between academic stress and depression among adolescents (r=.366**,p=.004).results showed that there is no significant relationship between academic stress and social support among adolescents in Kira secondary school(r=-.157,p=.119>0.01) and that there is a significant relationship between social support and depression among adolescents in Kira secondary school(r=-.437,p=.000).
