| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse among the adolescents. The study is correlation in nature thus finding out what degree a relationship exist between parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse among the adolescents. The research targeted the ‘O’level students of Kitende secondary school in Entebbe Wakiso district aged between 11 to 16 years. The responses to each item of the Parental separation scale are assigned scores i.e. Strongly Agree-4 points, Agree-3 points, Disagree-2 points and strongly disagree- 1 point. The responded scores to all the eleven items are then added up together on a continuous scale and the one with the highest scores indicate high parental separation while the one with the lowest scores indicate low or less parental separation.
After scoring each and every data collected by every instrument’s or questionnaires, data was then analyzed with the use of the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) along with Pearson’s correlation coefficient which provided statistical results which later provided the researcher with a conclusion on whether there was a significant relationship between parental separation, self-esteem and substance abuse among the adolescents.
The research results revealed that there is a no significant correlation between Parental Separation &Self-esteem and Parental separation & Substance Abuse but there was a significant relationship between Self-esteem and Substance Abuse among the adolescents. Last but not least, the study recommends that, the government of Uganda should start up programmes on media houses such as radio and television sets to help sensitize parents on how to improve a child’s self-esteem, this is because according to the study results, there was a significant relationship between Self-esteem and Substance Abuse among the adolescents. | en_US |
