Intrinsic motivation, employee engagement and job performance among employees of Kampala Capital City Authority

The purpose of the study was to find out the relationship among intrinsic motivation, employee engagement and job performance among employees of the Kampala Capital City Authority . The study focused on clear objectives which included finding out whether intrinsic motivation is related to employee engagement, finding out whether employee engagement is related to job performance, finding out whether intrinsic motivation is related to job performance and finding out whether intrinsic motivation and employee engagement can predict job performance.The study employed a cross sectional survey, correlational in nature on a population of (400) employees both male and female and a sample size of 196 respondents was selected using a systematic sampling technique. Three standardized questionnaires whose reliability coefficients were above 0.7. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) using the different units of analysis. The data was presented using frequency-percentages tables for demographic data section and Pearson Rank Correlations Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses. The study adopted a regression analysis as it was basically two tailed and the researcher found out that employee engagement had a higher impact than Intrinsic motivation on job performance by comparing the standardized correlations (beta = 0.441 versus beta =0.064). And also the adjusted R2 of the model was 194 with R2 = 0.207. This meant that the linear regression explained 21% of variance in the data was contributed by other factors other than employee engagement. This study indicated that there is a significant relationship among the three variables of intrinsic motivation, employee engagement and job performance among the employees of Kampala capital city authority. The suggestions in areas where further research should be conducted have also been pointed out in order to help other researchers as well as the organizations work on issues relating to the same variables.
