Perceived Social Support, Coping Strategies and Psychological Wellbeing among Adolescents.
Abstract
This correlational study entitled Perceived Social Support, Coping Strategies and
Psychological Wellbeing among Adolescents which was carried out at Kingsway High school
where 88 students were interviewed. The study examined the following objectives; to examine
whether there is a significant relationship between Perceived Social Support and coping
strategies, to examine whether there is a significant relationship between coping strategies and
psychological wellbeing and lastly to establish whether there is a significant relationship
between Perceived Social Support and psychological wellbeing among adolescents. The
respondents were chosen randomly.
This current study revealed that there is a negative non-significant relationship between
Perceived social support and coping strategies. This shows that adolescents who had low social
support were likely to cope with their issues but rather in unhealthy ways. It was further
revealed that there is a significant relationship between perceived social support and
psychological wellbeing. This could be because such adolescents feel supported and cared for.
This causes them to build self-esteem and enhance their psychological wellbeing. Lastly, the
results revealed that there is no significant relationship between coping strategies and
psychological wellbeing. This implies that the psychological well-being of adolescents is not
dependent on coping strategies and vice versa.
